CHAPTER TWELVE
Carah rushed through the crowds of people milling about trying to find some way to help and made her way to Hunter's engineering tent. She hoped that one of his assistants would be there, but the place was empty except for some of the robots. "Too bad you guys can't really communicate with me," she said. "I could use some help."
Carah cleared off one of the wheeled carts and loaded up everything she thought might be helpful. Everyone ignored her as she pushed the cart to the spot where the collapse occurred. She understood that no one on site had any particular training in geology or mining, but she knew that if people were trapped, time was of the essence.
"I sure hope I can remember how to do this," she said as she set a small bot at the edge of the debris pile and pulled a headset on. While lots of people were discussing what they could do to help the people who were trapped, Carah was the only one actually doing anything. She pulled out her phone and sent a text to Brodie. "Keep your phone handy. I'm dealing with an emergency and may need your help."
She opened the laptop and was relieved not to see a flashing password request screen. She took a couple of deep breaths to steady her nerves before trying to make the bot do anything. Sheâd spent a lot of time with Hunter showing her the bots he was testing that werenât part of the movie. When she was ready, she did what she thought would move it forward. It moved.
Carah felt like she needed every ounce of concentration she could muster. She pulled up the hood of her sweatshirt and focused on the screen. Hunter was thrilled that she wanted to know more about his bots. These little guys with tracks instead of wheels were something he'd brought along to work on and test when he wasn't working on âNebulon.â Over the past few days he'd shown her how to run them and said she was a natural. She hoped his life didn't depend on the fact that he'd been honest with her and not just paying her complements.
She hunched over the screen and controls and worked the bot through the rubble. There was a lot of information displayed on the screen, but most of it didn't seem like anything that would help her. It was really dark tunneling through the pile. Carah finally remembered that the bot had lights so she turned them on. It might have been better if she hadn't. She could see what appeared to be an endless pile of rock in front of her little friend. It was daunting, but at least the bot was still moving.
Carah had no idea how long she'd been working with the bot before the view in front of it seemed a little bit brighter. She fought the urge to rush and kept the little guy moving steadily ahead. The bot was no longer surrounded by rock.
