Chapter Seven

Rhetta came to the door and announced, “Your Pa’s here again, and he be yelling your name girl.”

Jilly shook her head. “I suppose I better go talk ta him but I sure don’t want to.”

Capone threw the blanket off of himself and said, “You stay here, I’ll deal with your dad.” He pulled on his jeans and stepped away from the bed gingerly. His leg was sore but it felt better.

Jilly looked scared. “Capone?”

He threw his cut on and turned to look at her.

“He’s always loaded for a fight. Just stay outta rifle range, OK?” She bit at her lip.

Capone stared at her. “Baby girl. I’ve been in battles. I can handle this. I just want you to be rid of this man. It’s time you got a chance to live.” He turned away and walked down the hall. When he went outside, he saw a group there.

Boomer, Jackal and Dixon stood on the front porch talking to Herman Pope.

“I want my gel out here right now. Ya people got no right ta hide her from me.” Herman growled.

“We aren’t hiding her, you damn fool,” Boomer replied with a growl of his own. “She’s been sick and is too weak to bother right now.”

“Ya donc pas t'cacher, she’s always sick,” Herman snarled. “I need her ta come home and take care of me. I ain’t had nothing ta eat for two days now. She’s got chores ta do.”

“Well, that’s just too bad isn’t old man?’ Dixon growled. “She isn’t going anywhere until she’s feeling better.”

“You can’t hold her here, dat’s kidnapping.” Herman lifted his rifle at the two men.

“Put the gun down old man.” Capone snarled. “Cuz right now, I know the Hogans got a bead on you and if your finger twitches even a little, they will cut you down and save Blue the trouble of ending you.” He pushed the door open and stepped out on the porch.

“The Hogans know how we do things here in da swamp.’ Herman retorted. “Dey wouldn’t shoot me.”

“Wrong, De’pouille saleau,” Sonny called out from just inside the house. “Ya come here looking for trouble, ya drew your gun first, and we got the right to protect our own and our invited guests.” He pushed the door open and leading with his rifle in firing position.

Clive stepped outside too. “Now Herman, I know you’re hungover and probably not seeing things straight right now, but I suggest you lower dat rifle real slow and take yourself home. Jilly ain’t goin’ nowhere for at least another day or so. Then it will be up ta her whether she comes home. Not you and not me, but her.”

“You can’t do dat to me Clive. She’s my only child right now and I need her home,” Herman whined.

“Then you should have taken better care of her, saleua.” Clive snarled.

Herman looked over at Capone and snorted, “I see she got you away with her didn’t she? You never should have followed her home, boy. I had every right ta teach you some manners.
