Chapter 23 - A Mystery

Ican’t believe the cops thought Jett and I were involved in Payton’s death! Katt contemplated how they’d brought them down to the precinct as suspects, people of interest. How did their paperwork get so messed up? At least Professor Hath had been there to help clear matters up … and Jett’s recording of the day. What would’ve happened if she’d gone in alone?

Katt paced her room, trying to decide what it all meant. The reports the police officer had shown them had been handwritten but by whom? Gods above, it was all too much. Katt just wanted to focus on school and classes. She didn’t even want to date, although the more time she spent with that damned moody werewolf …

Pausing her pacing, Katt punched her thighs. No! Jett doesn’t like me. She barely tolerates me. Stop imagining anything more happening, even if I have seen her naked … the best part of the day was when I learned about werewolves.

Katt snorted. Jett would probably punch me if I told her that.

Dizzy from circling such a small space, Katt fell onto her bed. I wonder what it would be like to be a wolf? She shook her head. No, I like being a witch.

She sat up. I wonder if my books have anything that could help Jett with the blocks in her memories. Katt pulled out her hidden books, and began to do some research. She was good with magic, very good. She knew how to combine spells to do new tricks. She’d always been able to amaze her mom. Katt smiled. Maybe I can amaze a cantankerous wolf.

A few hours later, she had the start of something real. It used the Power of Seven, something she knew was old, very old. When she’d first brought up the Power of Seven spell, her mom had no idea what she’d been talking about. She’d spent most of a summer and the following fall studying the patterns, but she knew if you used the Power of Seven, a single witch could do fantastical things.

She pulled out the book on coven magic her mom had snuck into her suitcase. It was the one tome in her collection she wasn’t familiar with. If a single witch could increase her abilities with the Power of Seven, what could a full circle of witches do? The spell on Jett was powerful enough to last for over six years. That wasn’t just any kind of magic. To unwind it, and not hurt the wolf, a mixture of counter spells would need to be implemented. If they could be performed simultaneously, all the better.

Laughter in the hall reminded Katt she lived in the dorms, not back home. Though Alex hadn’t returned, they’d eventually walk through that door. Hiding a single magic book wouldn’t be difficult, but having half her library strewn about … she sighed. She picked up her magical mess, getting everything put away. She was losing concentration, and even if Alex took a few hours to return, she was done studying for now.
