Chapter
Twelve
Separating the nonessential crew members and bringing them to a safe location seemed to be a sore point for everyone in my group. They were all grumbling as we filed out of the outpost and walked along the shoreline. Baften was with us, as she was the one giving me directions to a possible safe area. I refused to acknowledge the captainâs presence, and much to my delight, so did everyone else.
As we walked, I watched the collapsing ridgeline with trepidation. Nothing about the caldera felt safe anymore. The hotspots were piping out superheated air and stirring up possible tornadoes, and we had to walk through an exposed area with no hopes of shelter? What the hell was Lâeau thinking? This was so dangerous. We didnât know what path the mudslide or the lahar would take, and the nonessentials were walking into a trap. Lâeau should have a plan for this situation. But no, he went flying by the seat of his pants with no discussion about the ramifications. He deserved a broken nose. And a kick to the shins. How dare he separate us? Bastard.
âThis is a dumb idea, a seriously dumb idea,â I muttered to Baften, but she just ignored my constant complaints. Her gaze remained dead ahead until we found a clearly marked path. âYou can tell that dumbass captainââ
âI agree with him, Wild. This is not the place for you. Especially you. If you distract the captain and shit happensââ
âShit has already happened, Lieutenant. Can you not hear it? See it? Weâre fucked, and weâre going to be fucked no matter where we are!â I shouted. She flapped her hands to silence me, but I refused to hide the truth. âThere is a lahar heading our way. They move fast, super fast. There is no possible fucking chance that weâre going to get ahead of it and still remain safe! How many tributaries and small rivers empty out into this StarGodammned lake? And they all come in from this mountain range or caldera, if you like the real name. We are in the middle of a caldera. The ranges have erupted, and itâs only a matter of time before the centre does as well. How do you think the geyser basins are formed? How?â
âCommander Wild, simmer down now, or I will put a gag on you!â Baften ordered over my increasingly loud rant. I shook my head slowly, my mouth zipped up tight. I didnât even last a minute before I continued.
âI fucking dare you to try. You think youâre so smart with your fancy scientists who only read fucking computer screens and don't know what itâs like out there? I have been paying attention, and if some Podunk forgotten-about captain thinks that he can just shunt me off somewhere else because heâs so bloody distracted, well fuck him. Fuck you! Fuck this goddamned world!â I stood there with my chest heaving and the words echoing in the valley for all to hear. I was angrier than I ever thought was possible about Lâeau sending me away.
