CHAPTER TWELVE

Sync felt like a teenager with the school nurse as he led her to the office to address his issues. He added wounded pride to his growing list of dysfunctions. “Here,” he said, opening the main office door and shutting it behind him once she entered. She took a seat in one of the chairs along the wall and patted the one next to it, solving the oddly complicated problem of where to sit.

“So, tell me what’s going on,” she said, her tone soothing as she took his hand.

He looked down at the union. “Would you be offended if we didn’t hold hands? My brain can’t think when…”

She released him. “Not a problem,” she assured, holding her own hands now. “So…have you ever felt like this before?”

He stopped himself when he almost said no. “Maybe,” he muttered, searching his memory.

“Would’ve been before all this,” she thought.

“Surely, yes.” He remembered. “I was taken out of school at twelve and homeschooled. School was…madness but I thrived because of my gifts. The more madness, the more I thrived. But my grandmother got ill, and I had to stay home and help care for her while my mother worked. She was a widow. It was then that everything became difficult.”

“So, you need that… chaos.”

“It seems like it.”

“How did you manage when homeschooled? I mean, you figured out something, right?”

“I read a lot. Ten different books at a time—it was the diversity and pressure that calmed me. I recited everything to my Jida which seemed to help with her mental deterioration.”

“Who’s your Jida?”

“My grandmother. Sorry, it’s Arabic.”

“Don’t be sorry. I bet she liked that. And I bet you were a cute little thing.”

He had to smile at her rose smelling tendencies, no matter the journey. “I was popular with the girls,” he admitted.

“You had girlfriends?”

He shook his head. “Girls were…something abstract to my gifts. Something I intended to delve into eventually.”

“Uh oh,” she said. “You never got around to it?”

He let out a breath. “There was one girl in my early college days. She was American. Very religious which…despite my aversion, I found attractive in a woman. She was strong, beautiful, intimidating.”

“Intimidating how?”

“She was…experienced, you could say. Sexually. I think that threw me off track somehow.”

“Because you’re supposed to lead in that, you thought.”

He regarded her. “Yes, definitely.”

“Have you ever…been with a woman who wasn’t experienced?”

He shook his head. “I have…honestly never been with a woman at all. Sexually.”

She didn’t hide her shock and he eyed her. “Are you saying…I was your first?”

He sat back and sighed. “Yes. That’s what I’m saying. It wasn’t that I didn’t intend to…have relations but as fate would have it, every time I attempted it, something would happen. Nothing extraordinary, just something that prevented it. And then I was propositioned by David for his program, and I threw myself into the studies in his field and never really had time to think much about it.”

“Wow,” she whispered. “So, you waited all that time for me?”

He could tell she was joking but… “I have actually wondered over our circumstances.
