Petey

On Wednesday night, I spent most of the early evening lounging at the clubhouse.

I played cards with a few of the prospects, I drank a beer with Brock, and I sat on one of our couches, content to recline and relax the early part of the evening away. Nothing had happened since Monday night thanks, I suspected, to our increased presence. Only Brock knew that I had a date tonight; he had given me permission to take Anna out and treat her for as long as needed.

I sat on our couch with the intention of treating Anna as someone I wanted to really get to know. I would, of course, flirt with her, perhaps even go all the way with her, but I didn’t want this to be a continuation of Sunday night’s near hookup. I wanted it to be its own thing.

And as the time approached for me to head out, I went through steps that I hadn’t done since I’d become single. I actually made an effort to look clean. I washed my hands repeatedly. I made sure that I smelled nice—or as nice as possible, given that I would be riding my bike over to her place to pick her up.

Admittedly, there was a mild fantasy in me that wanted to run into her place, sweep her off her feet, take her to her bed, and do things to her that I had come inches away from doing. But no—the incident had prompted me to see her in a less frenzied light, and to fall back into bad habits just didn’t make much sense.

As soon as I felt confident and ready, I headed outside, got on my bike, and paused. It was going to be my first serious date since Kathryn. I’d had sex since then and had flirted with women, but I’d always kept an arm’s distance away from intimacy. This was going to be a little bit different.

But it was the good kind of different. It was the kind of different that would allow for something much better than what I was getting right now. It was the kind of different that would make my life better if I pushed through just a little discomfort.

I revved the engine to life, put the kickstand up, and rode off toward Anna’s apartment, a small place in a two-story building about ten minutes outside of Romara. The bike ride did wonders for settling my mind, just as it always did. Landon had asked me why I stayed loyal to the club, but I realized that one reason I had not articulated was that it just, simply put, gave me so many damn opportunities to be on the bike.

I texted Anna when I got outside her apartment that I had arrived, though I suspected she heard me well enough with the roar of the engine. Hell, everyone in the apartment complex probably knew that I had arrived. Motorcycles tended to have that “trumpets at all angles” noise level.

Wonder how well she’s going to be dressed, I thought.
