TWENTY-THREE

Bizarre Love Triangle

David didn’t use the bathroom at the Cheesecake Factory. Instead, he hurried out of the family-fun restaurant, jumped into the nearest cab, and made his way to the door of the one person who could help him make sense of his sudden and entirely unexpected romantic predicament.

Designated Dean told him a lengthy story about a club in Santa Monica that had a giant cereal bowl where girls wrestled in gallons of milk and attempted to beat each other senseless with huge plastic spoons. David listened intently and thanked Designated Dean for taking the time to talk to him. Then he made his way to the door of the only other person who might be able to help him make sense of his sudden and entirely unexpected romantic entanglement.

“Wowza!” said Alison after David had told her about his date with Kellyn and Dorinda.

“Yup,” said David, sitting by the window of Alison’s bedroom, looking out at her pool.

Turning to face her, he rattled out a quick, despairing, “So what should I do? Should I do anything? Should I not do anything? What would you do?”

Alison sat on the edge of her bed. She recognized how much it had taken for him to approach her for advice. They had been best friends at the dawn of Alison’s transformation into Hottie, but David was not by nature a confider. And then he’d developed a painful crush on her. Even though they’d got beyond that weirdness, their relationship had not reverted to what it had once been. Over the past few months, it had seemed like they were only technically friends because they had a mutual friend in common. And that mutual friend was a superhero. But now she had the opportunity to get her best friend back. Alison looked at the confused but hopeful expression on David’s face and realized what she said next held the key to reestablishing their relationship.

She walked over to David and sat down on a bamboo chair a few feet from the window. Holding his gaze, she said, “You know how you liked me and that didn’t happen? Do you think maybe you’re hanging out with them ’cuz they’re like the closest thing you can get to me?”

David didn’t say a word. He walked quickly away from the window and headed for the door. Alison cursed inwardly. That was totally the wrong thing to say. It was something she’d wondered deep down, but as soon as she saw David’s reaction, she knew that it was a thought, it wasn’t a say.

“Sorrysorrysorrysorry. Wait. Stop. Come back!” Alison threw herself in front of the bedroom door, kicking it shut behind her. David was inches away. He looked angrier and more hurt than she’d ever seen him.

“You’re a jerk,” he finally muttered.

She nodded in agreement. “I am a jerk.”

“That’s what you think?” he asked, still annoyed. “That I’m still hung up on you?”

Alison tried to lead David back into the room. “I was kidding. I was completely kidding. I wasn’t actually kidding at all.
