Zach

I couldn’t sleep. The conversation with Chloe replayed in my head over and over until I felt like I was going insane. Years later, we were both still hurting from my actions. If I could turn back the time, I would.

After tossing and turning all night, I finally rolled out of bed at four, took a shower, and left for the airport, even though my flight to San Diego was scheduled for takeoff four hours later. Being in the same radius as Chloe and knowing how much of an idiot I’d been was killing me. I desperately needed to get away to regroup.

After the plane landed, I took a cab and drove straight to Amelia’s office. She greeted me with a wide grin before pulling me in for a hug.

“How was your flight?” she asked.

“Uneventful.”

“Good. Come on, let me show you the office.” She led the way to a room on the right. I glanced around the small space furnished with a desk and a chair.

“I like it.”

“Glad you do. Anyway . . .” She gestured to the room in general. “This is all I can afford at the moment. Do you need anything before I go?”

“Nah. I’m good.”

She chuckled. “Still a man of few words. Glad to see you haven’t changed.”

I smirked. “Still the same, Lia.”

She shook her head, smiling. “I’m just gonna go finish setting up my office. Yell if you need anything.” She headed toward the door, then paused and turned around. “Thanks for flying out here to help me with this.” She glanced around the room proudly. “My own author services firm. Before Connor, um, passed away, we had a fight. He wanted this so much for me that he got frustrated when I was hesitant about leaving my old firm to start my own.” She trailed off and took in a deep, shaky breath. “I wish he was here to experience this with me.”

“He’d be so proud of you, Lia.” When tears flooded her eyes, I walked over and hugged her.

Amelia and Connor were high school sweethearts. I never met him before he died, but from what she told me, I felt like I knew him. They got married after graduation and had a son together. He died of a heart attack caused by high blood pressure two years ago.

“I hope so.” She wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand before extricating herself from my arms. “What about you? Anyone special?”

“I’m working on it.”

She smiled. “I need to meet this woman who has managed to tear down your walls.”

I pushed down the urge to tell her all about Chloe. I had a lot of work to do to gain Chloe’s trust first, so I didn’t want to jinx it. “Someday, hopefully.”

She smiled. “I’ll hold you to that promise. I better let you settle in. We’ll catch up later.”

She squeezed my arm and walked out the door. I couldn’t imagine losing someone who owned my heart—losing Chloe—and moving on with my life without them. It would destroy me.
