"Oh my God." Sadie squeals as she jumps off a plush beige arm chair. "It's been too long." She bounces to me and pulls me into a tight hug.
"It has." I missed her like I missed my sister. "Trent was right. You got tall." I'm in four inch wedges, and I'm just barely eye to eye with her.
She laughs. "I was always tall. But thanks. I think."
I offer her my arm. "You look like a model."
"Maybe a catalog model."
"You just need Tyra to give you an edgy makeover."
"What do you think it would be?"
I study her carefully. She has the same intense, dark eyes as Trent, but hers scream let's go rather than stay away. Her hair is long, dark, thick. Her features are strong. Bold. Like her. "Something short and asymmetrical."
"Hmm… yeah."
"One of those bobs like this." She draws the lines of an asymmetrical bob with her pointer finger.
"Exactly."
"What do you think?" She turns back to Trent. "Can I pull it off?"
"Shave your head." His eyes meet mine as he stands. They're asking something, but I haven't got a clue what it is.
"So guys won't pay attention?" She rolls her eyes. "He's like a caveman." She drops her voice an octave to imitate her brother. "No boy touch my sister. She my property. She never even kiss boy. I not let her."
My lips curl into a smile. "That's the best impression I've heard all day."
"Oh yeah?" He raises a brow you sure about that.
I nod damn straight.
His lips curl into a half-smile. Not the mild amusement I used to expect from him. More like I'm trying not to admit how charming I find you.
"Be honest, Sadie." I link my arm with hers. "Is he the worst?"
"As a concept, yeah? Of my brothers? God…" She rubs her chin with her thumb. "What a question."
"Most over-protective," I clarify.
"Yeah. I think so. Him or Grayson. Zack is kinda… Well, you know."
I laugh. Yeah, I know Zack.
"And Lucas. He's more involved in his own thing."
I nod. I didn't know Lucas before their brother killed himself. Only after. But I can still see how it destroyed him.
"I have to be honest, Delilah." Sadie leads us toward the dress section in the corner. "I'm not sure why you invited me. I mean, I'm happy to be here. But you're much more stylish than I am." She motions to her outfit—dark wash skinny jeans and a flowing white tank top.
"You have a classic style." And, well… maybe I did invite her so Trent would come. So I'd have an excuse to see him without giving him the wrong idea.
"Uh… okay…" She looks back to Trent. "You buying that?"
"Not sure." His eyes meet mine. "Seems like she's trying to butter you up for something."
"Delilah doesn't eat butter."
"The metaphor stands," he says.
Sadie looks up at me. "No flattery needed. I'm happy to help. Just… I'm not sure I'm that qualified to help."
"All I ask is your honest opinions," I say.
She nods. "I can do that." She motions to Trent.
