Luke is an asshole.

Luke is an asshole.

The words echoed in her head with each step she took. It had taken her over thirty minutes to walk back to the diner and get her car.

Her feet, along with her pride, hurt.

It had given her plenty of time for the anger that had started deep inside her gut to boil over. She let it happen again. She trusted him and he screwed her over.

Alyssa slid into the driver's seat and glanced at herself in the mirror. Holy Yeti hair. Her eye makeup was smeared into dark circles and she looked like some kind of crazed raccoon. Hopefully no one coming or going from the diner recognized her because in a town that small, someone would say something to her father.

She’d have no explanation for going around town looking like the bride of Frankenstein. With a quick swipe of an always handy wet wipe, she cleaned away as much of the makeup under her eyes as possible. She kept a brush and spare hair band in her glove compartment, mostly for days when she didn’t have time to do anything special with her hair, so it only took a minute to sweep her hair back and secure it.

Now at least, she looked semi put together and less like she’d been getting her rocks off all night. She glared at her reflection. God she was such a fool.

You’re not a good person, she’d told him.

His response had been so arrogant. Then we’d better make tonight count.

Luke hadn’t tried to reassure her.

He could not have been any clearer that he was a bastard, and yet she went home with him and had again been surprised at just how big of a bastard he really was. He’d opened up to her and she believed him. Was his sob story even true? Foster care? Really? Maybe it was just something he told women to make them feel sorry for him.

He sat at her kitchen table yesterday and offered them one and a half million knowing that he had his lawyer looking at ways to take everything without paying a cent. No wonder he upped the offer without even blinking. He knew he’d never have to pay it.

Alyssa slammed her palms on the steering wheel. How the hell was she going to fight this? He had more money she’d ever have in ten lifetimes and definitely more than she and her father had in this one. She forced air into her lungs until the red haze cleared a little.

His lawyer had said something about how the town could force her father off his land. It had been in his family for five generations, belonged to her family, so she had no idea how that was even a possibility. How the hell could someone just come along and take it away?

First she needed to know what Elliot was talking about, what Luke could use to force them off the property, so that she could do something about it.
