Chapter Fourteen
We spent a good forty-five minutes scouring the offices, with most of that time devoted to the one that most closely resembled a human habitation on the assumption that it had belong to Tomlinson.
Not that the feds had left it in great condition. Theyâd opened the mattress with razors, pulled the stuffing out of the sofa, and ripped every print and picture out of its frame. But for all the flotsam and jetsam of the search, there were at least fewer empty bottles and pizza boxes here.
If there had been anything worthwhile here, though, it had long been carted away. Presumably to some FBI lab or storage locker somewhere.
So, with no more idea of where Tomlinson might have gone or who heâd been working for than before, he headed back to the broken window.
A wasted trip in one sense, but I didnât fully regard it as a waste. Weâd learned something about Meryatum. Something huge.
And weâd reached an accord, kind of. He could drop his act, and we didnât have to worry about harboring an ancient war criminal.
Someone smarter than me might have had something profound to say about small victories or silver linings. Me? I was just glad we wouldnât be at each otherâs throats quite as much moving forward.
Weâd crossed half the warehouse when my phone rang. âOh hell. This better not be OâDonnell,â I said. âI donât want to have to lie to him.â
âAs if you havenât done that before,â Murphy muttered.
I ignored the comment and glanced at my phone. Big Z scrawled across the screen. âOh hell.â I knew I had to have this particular conversation, but I wasnât looking forward to it.
Still, I answered with so much fake cheer that I gave Murphy and his conversation with OâDonnell a run for its money in the BS games. âBig Z, howâs Miami treating you?â
âMiamiâs fine. Itâs New Boston Iâm not feeling so good about,â he answered. âWhat the hell happened to my boys the other night, Jilly?â
âNothing,â I said.
âNothing? Thatâs not what I hear. I hear they were disrespected. Mad disrespected, by some clown in a suit who was threatening to send them to jail.â
âOhâ¦that.â
âYeah. That.â
âThere was a little misunderstanding. But we got it all sorted out.â
âGot it all sorted out?â His tone rose. âJilly, these are my boys. They were doing you a favor. Now look, weâre friends. I like you, for a breather. Me, you, the boneman, we go back. But I canât be risking my boys ending up in lockup for doing you a favor.â
Oh hell. âNo, I know. Thatâs why I took care of it, Big Z. Look, Iâm real sorry. We both are. Murphy, heâs new. He doesnât understand how things work.â
âWhat now?â Murphy started, before I shot him a look that shut him up.
âWho was that?â
âWhat? Oh, itâs loud here. What Iâm saying is, weâre sorry. It wonât happen again.â
Silence. Then, a long sigh. âWell, youâre lucky I like you. But okay. Weâll let bygones be bygones. You just keep that fed on a leash, you hear me?â
âYou got it.
