That Big Yellow Shirt
I woke to the smell of bacon. Wandering into the kitchen, I started to ask if those were pancakes or waffles I smelled, when a strangely wolfy noise came out of my mouth and reminded me sharply that I was still on four feet. Well, paws.
“Aww! Your wolf is so cute, Dakota!” Kat said as she turned to set a stack of waffles on the table. She and Lindsi were apparently cooking together in pajamas. Lindsi wore lounge pants and a big t-shirt, whereas Kat wore a cute, short night-gown with a little silk robe over it. “Isn’t she cute, Lins?”
Lindsi spared me a glance from the griddle and nodded, smiling. “Love those spots under your eyes.”
I huffed appreciatively, being that there wasn’t much else I could do.
“Well, breakfast is almost ready,” Kat began hesitantly.
“And you’ll make a mess if you eat like that,” Lindsi finished for her. “So if you would, go ahead and—”
I was already back down the hall and in the room before she finished. Anariel had brought our bags in from the car last night, and he was still asleep, so I shifted back and started getting dressed. I put on a pair of jeans and a bra, then started digging for the shirt I wanted. As I rummaged about in the bag, I came across the night-shirt I’d brought along, a huge, bright yellow shirt with cute comic art on the front featuring the Monkey Queen and her geek-girl sidekick.
I grinned at the shirt. Steph had gushed to me about the series a few weeks back, and unlike many of the older people in our pack, who didn’t always “get” some of the stuff she geeked out over, I’d listened with honest interest. Steph had told me the main character reminded her of me: brave, snarky, and gay. I’d laughed and told her I could live with that.
A week later, she’d gifted me the shirt with an awkward admission that she must have mistakenly ordered a triple-x instead of large. Steph was a sweet kid. Yellow wasn’t really my color, and the shirt was so huge it hung off one shoulder and well past my knees, but I figured it’d make her happy if I came home from my trip with my scent on it so she’d know I’d used it. I did appreciate the gift, after all, and I wanted her to know I liked it.
Sadly, Anariel’s presence had foiled my original plans to wear the shirt to bed during my trip. I started to fold it back up when Anariel suddenly stretched and yawned behind me. I altered course and threw the shirt on in a hurry.
“Mmm. Is that bacon, I smell? And coffee?” Anariel smiled sleepily from the bed.
“And waffles!” I added cheerily, trying not to blush.
Anariel threw the covers back and slid off the bed, stood, and stretched again. “That sounds lovely.” He rubbed at his eyes lightly, then brushed his hair back from his face. The new cut suited him nicely, and even his bed-head looked great.
