I didn’t see Dylan for the rest of the day. His mom must have freaked out and took him home when she came to school. It didn’t seem fair for Dylan to get in trouble with Birk or his mother when I’d walked away without any consequences. Although I hadn’t wanted Mom to magic Birk, now that she had, I wished she’d helped Dylan too.

After school I quickly walked home, avoiding the paths. I hadn’t forgotten what had happened to me a few nights ago, and I still had the stitches to show for it. They itched like crazy. I raised my hand and lightly dragged my fingernails along my wound to scratch them. The spot was tender, but didn’t hurt so much anymore. My hair still stuck out in parts though.

Cars blew past me. One drove through a puddle, soaking the legs of my jeans. I cursed at the red Volkswagen and flipped the bird to the driver. I’d seen Sophie get out of the same car the other day. Had she been the one to soak me just now? Grr. If she didn’t quit bugging me, she was going to be on the business end of my little, magical finger.

That, and the fact that Mom and I had roots here, made it feel like a real home.

The rumble of an engine approached. It reminded me of the engine I’d heard before tumbling over my handlebars and toppling down the steep embankment. I spun around, my arms out at my sides, ready this time for whatever came my way. It was only Finnigan. He smiled as he slowed and then leaned across the leather upholstery to roll down the passenger window.

“Wanna ride?”

I stepped forward, placing my hands on the door. I looked away, almost embarrassed, wondering if I should explain why I’d taken off earlier.

A solid crease formed between his eyebrows. “Did I do something wrong?”

I shook my head. What could I have said to him? I want you to like me more. I want you to not like me at all? I want you to say that if everyone wasn’t avoiding you that you’d still want to go out with me. And I also want you to tell me you had nothing to do with Josie’s death, and I want that to be the truth.

That all sounded stupid and insecure and totally needy. Not to mention insane. Why was I
