“You up for something bigger?”

I didn’t look at Luke, slugging water. They’d ordered pizza, and I’d eaten far too much. The other three had called it a night. I made a point of being last to bed most nights — there was opportunity in the quiet hours.

“You’re throwing jobs my way damned fast.”

“You’ve earned it.” A one-shouldered shrug accompanied his comment.

“Have I?”

Luke was playing a different game — his attitude ever-evolving — like he wore a mask. Too close to mine for comfort.

“I worked out a way to get into the Reserve Bank. Think you can handle it?”

“You want me to rob the Reserve Bank of Australia?” It was our biggest bank, controlling interest rates, and inflation. Generally, it ran our economy. I leaned forward, pretending to consider it, cheering internally. At least I’d have something to tell Cal. Now I had to set it up so we could pull the sting off. “Shifting decimal points like before?”

“Bit more than that.”

“Yeah?” I twirled my water bottle in my hands, studying the ridges. Waiting. Always waiting.

“We change the interest rates — fluctuate it that tiny bit — a fraction of a fraction. The window will be less than a minute — less likely to be noticed.”

“You think they won’t notice you stealing what, a few million?” I sat up straight. Luke shook his head, holding out a hand.

“As we leave, we drop it a few points — something significant. In the fallout of sorting thousands of home loans they’re losing to, arguing with customers and the media to rectify mistakes, we just...disappear.”

“You want to close out operations and walk away?” Not likely. That was the problem with hacking or theft. It was hard to break the habit. You got caught up with taking more and more, every time you escaped scot-free.

“It’s enough to make your boys happy, dude. But you know they’ll want more. That cash won’t sustain you. What do you do when you run out?”

Luke tilted his head back, not answering for a moment. “Then I get a new crew. Or I walk.”

You’ll never be able to stop.

I turned it all over in my head, working through what was needed to pull the job off. I was missing something. I ran a hand over my head. Luke’s eyes tracked the action. “Sounds like a plan. I’m shattered, going to bed.”

I stood, rolling my shoulders. Several things popped. Luke hadn’t moved.

“So, you in?”

“Yeah. Why not?”
