CHAPTER

TWENTY-ONE

Kyson

“Good morning.” Kaia yawns as she walks out of her room and into the kitchen.

“It’s one o’clock in the afternoon.” I raise a brow at her.

“Whatever. I was up late last night, and I don’t work until later, why not sleep in?” She shrugs. “What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be working?”

“I have been all morning. I just stopped home to grab something to eat. I’m heading back to the studio in a few,” I explain.

Kaia nods, walking over to the fridge and pulling out the carton of eggs just as Gabby walks out of her room.

My eyes shoot to her, but she doesn’t look at me. It’s been over a month and a half since New Year’s, and she hasn’t looked at me since.

I’ve tried to get her attention, annoying her how I always do, but it hasn’t worked. I’m not even looking for her to get mad anymore. Just some sort of reaction at all would be nice.

But I’ve gotten nothing. Since that night, it’s like I don’t even exist to her. It’s probably for the best. I should probably just let it go.

So, why can’t I?

I didn’t plan on kissing Ashley at midnight. For starters, I didn’t want to lead her on when I knew she had a crush on me.

Which, of course, I ended up doing and then had to let her know I wasn’t interested. I could tell it hurt her, and it made me feel like shit.

Also, it felt wrong ringing in the New Year kissing someone while Gabby was standing across the room.

The last time we were at a New Year’s party together, I kissed her. On the cheek. But still, that kiss on the cheek meant more to me than any other New Year’s kiss ever did.

The second I kissed Ashley, I regretted it. It felt completely wrong. And when I pulled away and looked over to see Gabby was nowhere to be found, I hated myself.

Maybe with all she’s done, I shouldn’t have. I don’t owe her anything. Yet still, I did.

“Hey, where are you headed?” Kaia asks as Gabby walks past us in the kitchen, toward the door.

“Just running some errands.” Gabby smiles at her. “I’m probably gonna stop for some groceries, do you need anything?” she asks.

“Hmm.” Kaia turns, looking in the fridge again. “I went the other day, so maybe just some more orange juice. Oh, and some of those good granola bars. You know the ones I’m talking about.”

“Yup. Got it,” Gabby says, writing it down in her phone.

“Kyson, can you think of anything else?” Kaia asks me.

I wait for Gabby to look at me. To acknowledge that I’m here. But she still doesn’t, keeping her eyes glued to her phone.

“No, I’m good,” I finally say.

“Cool. See you later,” Gabby says, her words intentionally aimed toward Kaia.

“Thanks, Gab,” Kaia shouts at her as she walks out the door before turning to me. “What’d you do?” she asks, her voice amused.

“Nothing.” I sigh. “I’m going back to work.
