6. SPU

The truth is covered in shadow, and lies shine brightly in the spotlight. Our world is so twisted that we’ve become okay with that and have accepted it.

The ride had been for the most part smooth, with a few bumps from annoying potholes cropping up every so often. Jason braced himself as the Hummer came crashing through the east entrance doors and slid to a grinding halt. Jason and Kara looked slowly around the area, scanning carefully for zombies. But beyond a few stragglers, there weren’t any. Jason had thought at first that he would feel relieved, but he didn’t. There should have been a couple dozen based only on the crowd of tourists he had seen upon first arriving at Cosmic City. And he had seen enough zombie flicks to know zombies didn’t just disappear. At first he had thought it was the military, having found the downed helicopter and abandoned military jeep. But the way that they had found them gnawed at his gut: abandoned and destroyed, not to mention that they hadn’t actually encountered any military personnel so far. There was no way that the military had control of the situation.

The Hummer drove down the east wing and stopped at a service elevator marked SPU. Jason jumped out first and began waltzing toward the elevator.

“Hold on,” Kara called, stepping out of the Hummer.

“What’s up, Kara?” Jason called back.

“You don’t find anything strange about this? That the government decided to build a survival bunker in a mall or that there aren’t any SPU personnel to check us over?” she replied, crossing her arms over her chest and looking around cautiously.

“I hadn’t thought of it that way, but it’s our only chance of finding supplies or any more clues to the mystery, so …” Jason replied, pushing the button to call the elevator up to them. Kara rolled her eyes at him as he smirked. The elevator opened, and out shambled a half a dozen zombies. Jason jumped away from the elevator and took aim with his shotgun. The two opened fire, expertly killing off the clumped-up crowd of corpses. Jason checked his gun and then mumbled under his breath.

“What’s wrong?” Kara asked.

“I’m out of ammo. Let’s hope we find some in there,” he replied, and she began digging in her pockets. Jason watched as she extended her hand and revealed three shotgun shells. He looked stunned for a moment and then smiled back at her and took them. They lingered for a moment and then quickly retracted their hands from one another. With a bark from Sullivan, the three entered the elevator, unsure of what they would find.

The elevator dinged, and the thick doors slid open. Inside, the bunker looked as if it had been ransacked. A lightbulb swung from the roof; crates had been dumped over and shelves destroyed. Jason looked around. There was nothing … except for plenty of blood smearing the walls and painting the floor. Kara couldn’t help but cover her mouth with her hands as she glanced at the gore around her.
