Congress passed the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which, upon ratification, abolished slavery in America (1865).

Black Entertainment Television (BET), the first black-owned company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, began broadcasting on this day from its headquarters in Washington, D.C. The network’s founder, Robert Johnson, became the first African-American billionaire (1980).

The 54th Massachussets Regiment of the Union Army, the first African-American infantry unit, was organized on this day during the Civil War. They became the subject of numerous books and films (1863).
