She had done what the adults did. Just like with the bridge. They knew something was there. They knew people got hurt, that some people had died. They decided to ignore it. They didn’t have to admit it was supernatural, but they should’ve sealed off the unused bridge. Instead, they pretended it was nothing, but a myth.

Her own dishonesty added even more impact to whatever karma had in store for her. She should’ve told the truth and now it was too late. They might charge her with perjury if she changed her story. Monica certainly couldn’t forget within the confines of the Appalachian Psychiatric Hospital. Even if it was luxurious, it was still a mental hospital. Kathy and Stephanie would never have an opportunity to forget. A quest for the truth seemed like a gesture of honor in their memory, even if nothing came from it.

She grew keenly aware of the situation as they neared Sunnyside. Two girls gone. Just gone. How could a simple prank result in two fatalities, not only two fatalities, but two unnatural fatalities? As terrible as the girls had been in life, they didn’t deserve what happened. They were just kids even if they pretended otherwise.

She didn’t ask to be the sole survivor. Why did that burden fall upon her? Monica had survived physically, but her psychological survival was uncertain. Maybe she would heal in a few weeks, maybe a few months or maybe she wouldn’t ever recover.

“Are you sure, sweetie?” Sheila glanced from the steering wheel. “You can stay out as long as you need to. The doctor will excuse what you need.”

“It will be good to have some routine back. If it’s too early, I will stay home a little longer.” She needed to find some answers. She needed documents, published accounts or reports. The internet seemed like an ideal resource, but she wanted facts first. She didn’t need thousands of theories, suppositions or assumptions. She needed something tangible and concrete to start with. Once she exhausted the search for substantial details, then would she turn to the internet and wade through the opinions and guesstimates. It often took forever to find the right material online, and even then, there was no promise it was factual or accurate.

This was mainly a regional legend so she needed to start in the region. There had to be some local history books on the lore. If the school library didn’t have it, the city library would have something. She couldn’t accept that two girls died and one committed to a mental hospital, for what amounted to a fluke. There had to be a reason or a purpose. At least, she hoped there was.

She showered before bed as she prepared to return to school the following day. It was going to be quiet without the Terrible Three. The vipers. She shouldn’t have called them that. There wasn’t going to be anyone. Aside from the harassment, no one really talked to her.

She laid out her clothes and found an extra notebook.
