X – GOING AFTER THE WEEKEND BUTCHER

The night was challenged only by the lights of the city of Dubai and, like the stars drawing shapes in the sky, the skyscrapers, buildings, vehicles, and businesses sketched a luminous sea of colors that shone in the desert.

Covered by darkness and traffic, Francisco and Ahmed directed the taxi driver to stop in front of Detective Khalil’s house. The villa, surrounded by a cast-iron fence and protected by a security camera, did not seem like the home of a policeman, but rather of a wealthy businessman.

“Somebody has messed in their own nest,” commented Francisco.

“What does that mean?”

“Not everything is what it seems.”

“What are you saying?” Ahmed asked, getting more and more confused.

“That Detective Khalil isn’t legal. He must be getting bribes, or he extorts businesses, or worse, he just takes out the middleman.”

“An assassin for hire?”

“Exactly!” exclaimed Francisco.

Ahmed nodded at the obvious conclusion and patted him on the back.

“Well done. I knew you’d come up with the guilty party before the rest of the investigators.”

Francisco lifted a finger and stuck out his tongue a little. The craziness of it made his brain pound for a brief moment and froze his facial muscles. He himself couldn’t believe that they were so close to arresting a murderer. When he finally organized his thoughts and reacted, he said:

“We have to get proof.”

“You want us to go in his house?”

“Yes. He’ll think he’s untouchable and safe there. If he’s made a mistake and kept a trophy, I’m sure it will be in the house.”

Ahmed took a look around.

“How are you thinking about getting in?”

“By the back door,” he answered, shrugging his shoulders as if it were obvious.

They both walked carefully, or that’s what they thought anyway—went around the villa and stopped near the back door.

“Do you see the camera, Ahmed?”

“Yes, there it is, how are you going to disable it?”

“It should be enough just to keep it from recording us. Look! I’ll grab some of this mud and stick it, like a patch, on the lens.”

Francisco bent down, softened the improvised putty in his hand, and pressed it over the camera lens.

“Francisco!”

“What, Ahmed?”

“That wasn’t mud.”

“No?”

“No.”

“What was it, then?”

“I think it was dog shit.”

Francisco smelled his hand, cursed up a storm, kicked a streetlight a couple of times, hurting himself in the process, and cleaned his hand the best he could in some hedges.

“Okay?” asked Ahmed.

“Not completely, but I’ll wash my hands inside.”

“In the weekend butcher’s house?”

“Well, he’ll have water.”

“Sometimes I think you’re crazy.”

“Anyway, the important thing is to get inside. You wait for me here.”

“What? You’re not thinking about leaving me here by myself!” he whispered.

“Of course. I’m not going to let you risk your life.”

“None of that, I’m going with you. Remember I’m the one paying.”

Francisco closed his eyes tightly, shook his head nervously, and clenched his fists.

“Man! Okay, but don’t leave my side.”

“All right,” Ahmed said, smiling.

Hopping the back fence proved easy. They approached the back door, careful to not draw the attention of the neighbors, and confirmed it was locked.
