CHAPTER SEVEN

ON MONDAY MORNING, Bella was slightly nervous as she walked in to the Insurgo offices. She bought a double-shot cappuccino from the café downstairs to give her courage. Would Hugh be the same with her as he usually was, or would he avoid her? Would he be more difficult than he usually was on Monday mornings?

But he wasn’t in the office. He’d left Tarquin a message to say that he was in a meeting across town and probably wouldn’t make it in to the office until very late that day, if at all. Bella wasn’t sure if she was more relieved at not having to face him or disappointed at missing him; though she knew that she couldn’t let anyone guess how she was feeling. Nobody knew she’d been in Oxfordshire with Hugh, and it had to stay that way. As far as everyone at the Insurgo offices was concerned, he was the boss and she was simply the graphic designer. Full stop.

By Wednesday, Hugh knew that he had to show his face in the office or Tarquin would start working things out for himself. But he wasn’t sure if he could do what Bella had suggested and work on the Vegas principle.

On paper, it was easy. What had happened in Oxfordshire should stay in Oxfordshire.

The problem was, he could still remember what it felt like to wake up wrapped round her. And, worse still, he wanted to do it again.

But he couldn’t see a way of making this work. He already knew that from his experience with Jessie. Even though Bella wasn’t anything like Jessie, the equation was the same: business plus relationship equals disaster.

So either he dated her and she left the company—which wouldn’t be good for Insurgo, because she was a great designer—or she stayed in her job and he’d have to keep a lid on his feelings. It made business sense for it to be the latter. Plus he was used to keeping a lid on his feelings.

But that had been before Bella Faraday exploded into his life. Before he’d taken her home as his ‘unsuitable’ girlfriend. Before she’d turned his world upside down.

Bella was aware of every time Hugh walked into the room, even when her back was to the door.

She looked up several times from her work when he was in the main office, talking to Tarquin, and caught his eye. He looked away again almost immediately. And, because Hugh was so good at being impassive, she didn’t have a clue what he was thinking.

Was he thinking about what had happened between them? Did he feel the same pull, the same awareness, as she did? Or was he regretting every single moment?

She was half tempted to text him and suggest that they talked. But that would be needy and pathetic, and that wasn’t who she was. She’d got through Kirk’s betrayal, and this situation with Hugh wasn’t anywhere near that on the scale of awfulness.

Things would all settle down, soon enough.
