NOTE

THAT PART about Matt leaving the cap off the toothpaste?

Yeah, I might have been a little economical with the truth there. I mean, yes, he did do that, but he faced more of a challenge with me. Our three years of sharing a room could have been subtitled: When David Discovered His Inner Slob.

And I only got worse as I got older.

Again, thank God for Matt. Coping with my habits turned out to be one of his superpowers.

MATT CAME back from the restroom just as our server left the table. Matt gazed after him as he sat facing me. “You ordered already?”

“Uh-huh.” I shoved the menu card back into its holder.

Matt frowned. “Why didn’t you wait for me? How do you know what I want to eat?”

I did an eye roll. “Please. Like I don’t know you by now.” I counted off on my fingers. “Cock ’n’ Bull ginger beer, Heart Throb burger with sides of onion rings, sweet potato fries, and deep fried pickles.” I flashed him what I hoped was a smug grin. “Happy now?”

Matt gave a little contented sigh and settled against the chair back. “Okay, you’re off the hook.” He smacked his lips. “I love their Heart Throb sauce.”

“You can keep it.” I wasn’t that keen on jalapeños and cilantro. “I’m having a root beer, the Melting Pot burger, and poutine fries.”

Matt laughed. “You and your cheese curds. Easy to tell you were born here.” He let out another satisfied sigh. “I love Dotty’s burgers.”

I pointed to the sign above the bar. “Well, we are in the World Hamburger Headquarters, after all.” I grinned. Ever since he’d appeared in the bookstore, I’d been looking forward to this. Well, not so much the movie—initial reviews suggested it might be the recipient of a Raspberry Award—but the idea of chilling out with Matt over a burger was very pleasant.

When the server brought over our beverages, I took a long drink of my root beer, relishing the icy-cold liquid sliding down my throat. “So, anything new I need to be updated on?” Matt always made me laugh with his stories about his coworkers.

Matt regarded me for a second before reaching for his ginger beer and hastily swallowing a mouthful. “You know, it’s funny you should ask that….” Another quick drink. “I got asked out today.”

I paused, the glass midway to my mouth. “Asked out… on a date?”

Matt nodded. “One of the interns, Sandra, asked if I’d like to go to a party with her.”

I arched my eyebrows. “You haven’t mentioned her before.”

He gave a quick shrug. “We talk during the lunch break sometimes. She’s okay.”

“Only okay? Your enthusiasm is underwhelming.” I was surprised. Matt hadn’t gone on a date since Cathy.

Matt chuckled. “It shows, huh? Don’t get me wrong, she’s kinda sweet, but I sorta got the impression that I was part of a plan.”

“What do you mean?”

“She really likes Terry, one of the technicians—I see her staring at him all the time—but so far he hasn’t noticed her. I figure she asked me to see what he’d do.
