NOTE
THAT PART about Matt leaving the cap off the toothpaste?
Yeah, I might have been a little economical with the truth there. I mean, yes, he did do that, but he faced more of a challenge with me. Our three years of sharing a room could have been subtitled: When David Discovered His Inner Slob.
And I only got worse as I got older.
Again, thank God for Matt. Coping with my habits turned out to be one of his superpowers.
MATT CAME back from the restroom just as our server left the table. Matt gazed after him as he sat facing me. âYou ordered already?â
âUh-huh.â I shoved the menu card back into its holder.
Matt frowned. âWhy didnât you wait for me? How do you know what I want to eat?â
I did an eye roll. âPlease. Like I donât know you by now.â I counted off on my fingers. âCock ânâ Bull ginger beer, Heart Throb burger with sides of onion rings, sweet potato fries, and deep fried pickles.â I flashed him what I hoped was a smug grin. âHappy now?â
Matt gave a little contented sigh and settled against the chair back. âOkay, youâre off the hook.â He smacked his lips. âI love their Heart Throb sauce.â
âYou can keep it.â I wasnât that keen on jalapeños and cilantro. âIâm having a root beer, the Melting Pot burger, and poutine fries.â
Matt laughed. âYou and your cheese curds. Easy to tell you were born here.â He let out another satisfied sigh. âI love Dottyâs burgers.â
I pointed to the sign above the bar. âWell, we are in the World Hamburger Headquarters, after all.â I grinned. Ever since heâd appeared in the bookstore, Iâd been looking forward to this. Well, not so much the movieâinitial reviews suggested it might be the recipient of a Raspberry Awardâbut the idea of chilling out with Matt over a burger was very pleasant.
When the server brought over our beverages, I took a long drink of my root beer, relishing the icy-cold liquid sliding down my throat. âSo, anything new I need to be updated on?â Matt always made me laugh with his stories about his coworkers.
Matt regarded me for a second before reaching for his ginger beer and hastily swallowing a mouthful. âYou know, itâs funny you should ask thatâ¦.â Another quick drink. âI got asked out today.â
I paused, the glass midway to my mouth. âAsked out⦠on a date?â
Matt nodded. âOne of the interns, Sandra, asked if Iâd like to go to a party with her.â
I arched my eyebrows. âYou havenât mentioned her before.â
He gave a quick shrug. âWe talk during the lunch break sometimes. Sheâs okay.â
âOnly okay? Your enthusiasm is underwhelming.â I was surprised. Matt hadnât gone on a date since Cathy.
Matt chuckled. âIt shows, huh? Donât get me wrong, sheâs kinda sweet, but I sorta got the impression that I was part of a plan.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âShe really likes Terry, one of the techniciansâI see her staring at him all the timeâbut so far he hasnât noticed her. I figure she asked me to see what heâd do.
