Chapter 15

The bustier felt smooth as the palms she imagined cupping her breasts. His hands had been there. There, on the bustier. There, on the skirt and the hose. The garter belt snuggled against her hips with an intimacy she still craved.

What was Graham doing to her? Claire looked at herself in the bedroom's cheval mirror and couldn't believe she was wearing these clothes—clothes she'd bought for Monica and Daniel. And yet the sultry pout of her lips, the droop of her lashes as she continued to palm her breasts, was due to Graham. He affected her, Claire, in profound, disturbing ways. Just remembering that moment she'd been sure he would kiss her caused her to feel a similar ache.

If only Graham could see her now, he would surely be eating his heart out. Her own still felt the bite of the knowledge that he was on his way to meet another woman. Rose. Not that he'd said so, but he hadn't needed to.

She had no right to be jealous. It was professionally taboo and personally unwarranted. After all, he'd done nothing but give her some flowers for helping him out with his sister's situation. Then he'd expressed a wish to be friends and helped fix her sink. And he'd probably done that because she'd made him feel better about his childhood game.

Well, dammit, she needed some of the same for herself, someone to go to for advice and share childhood secrets with. Someone like...

"Daniel!" Suddenly realizing she was late for their on-line date, Claire raced out of the room. At nearly six feet tall, the highest heels she ever wore were flats and the stiletto boots made her feel like a vamped-up Amazon.

Down the stairs she flew, oblivious to everything but the time. On the last step she lost her balance and there went her left foot, twisting sharply under. A cry of pain wrenched from her throat as she tried to catch herself on the banister. She missed it, and air whooshed from her lungs as she fell there, splayed on the landing.

With a sob, she tried to pick herself up but sank back down in a heap. Needles of pain shot through her ankle and Claire commanded herself to be calm, to take stock of the damage.

Her cheek felt hot and bruised. Her left arm felt as if some muscles had been pulled; her right arm was all right, but her wrist was really sore. The impact had snapped the chain and it hung loosely from her neck—sore, too, but at least she hadn't broken it. Legs? Both legs okay. Right foot... fine.

And now... now she had to try to move her left foot and—"Oh God!" she screamed. Trying hard not to cry and not succeeding at all, Claire chanted her mantra of calm between sobs. "I... am... at peace. I... am..."

Crying in earnest, she gave it up and commanded herself to think as rationally as possible. She could not walk. She had to get help. Where was the closest phone? Kitchen.
