Chapter Nine

* Jill *

The short flight as well as our commute to the studio passes by in a blur. It doesn’t take long for us to set up the space with a table and a couple of chairs for the two of us. Damien’s small camera is setup on a tripod in between us, and another chair on the other side of the table is for the contestant.

It’s super basic, but it’ll do. The stage manager on staff got us a red backdrop to place behind the contestant’s chair, as well as some studio lights, so the video quality should be good enough for social media promos or whatever else Claire wants.

Once the contestants start arriving, time flies even faster. We called them in batches, and seeing as it’s just the two of us, we have our hands full trying to schedule everyone’s five-minute-interview as well as record them all while keeping all the questions and observational notes straight.

So many faces eager to be on television; so little time. We’ve shortlisted half a dozen candidates already, rejected at least as many, and that’s just before we break for lunch.

“Subway or KFC?” I ask Damien, who has been sitting beside me the entire time, simultaneously operating his camera as well as helping me keep the conversation with each potential contestant flowing.

He shrugs, but then gets distracted by something in the distance.

“Hi! Can I help you?” he calls out.

I lean over to follow his line of sight. Looks like someone has entered the studio, but he’s partially obscured by the backdrop.

“Is this the dating show audition?” a male voice asks.

I can’t get a good look at him, so I check my notes instead. One of the contestants from the previous time slot hadn’t turned up. Perhaps this is him?

“Your name, please?” I say.

“Daniel,” the man responds. “Please call me Dan.”

“He’s a bit late,” Damien grumbles. “Interrupting our lunch break.”

I leaf through my papers and find that he’s the no-show from the earlier batch. I’m just about to tell him that he’s missed his chance this morning, but then I spot the bright orange post-it on his application form. Owen was very keen on this guy for some reason, looking at the remarks he’s scribbled on the file.

I show Damien the note, and he sighs and switches the camera back on.

Then I wave at Daniel to come closer. “You’re a little late, but I think we can fit you in. Please take a seat.”

First impressions are… interesting. Dan reminds me a little of Damien. Though he looks to be a few years older and has a different hair color, as well as a beard, there’s still some resemblance there. Along with the similarly solid build, I think it’s the body language as well. Friendly but apprehensive. Like he’s not really sure he wants to be here.

“I almost didn’t turn up,” Dan remarks with an awkward chuckle.

Damien gets up from his seat to give Dan a clip-on microphone while I observe the two of them.
