CHAPTER 12
It had been impossible to look at Teagan as Hrafn admitted the reason his da planned the raid that killed most of the male population of their village. He was sure there would be revulsion in those grey eyes when he found out it was all Hrafnâs fault that so many had died that day.
Yet, when heâd finally gotten up the courage to look him in the eye, what Hrafn saw had been so much worse. For there was no denying the pity staring back at him. That was the last thing Hrafn wanted, especially from the man fate had given him to love.
âHey,â Teaganâs thumb and forefinger gripped Hrafnâs chin just enough to force him to keep his head up when heâd tried to look down again. âWhat is it?â
Hrafn didnât want to answer that. Seeing the pity was bad enough. The last thing he wanted to do was talk about it. Ever.
All he ever desired was to find a person who could love him, broken and all. Teaganâs pity would put any feelings he might have for Hrafn under question. How would he know if Teagan was being nice to him because he actually cared, or because he felt sorry for him?
It was that thought that pushed him to say, âPlease donât feel sorry for me because Iâm slow. I may not always understand everything but I couldnât bear it if you were only nice to me because of what my da did to me.â
He winced as he said that last part because he knew it wasnât entirely his daâs fault. âI mean, I was already not that bright,â he admitted. âTechnically, that last beating just made it more of a challenge to understand certain things.â
âFuck,â Teagan swore. This time it was Teagan who looked down at the ground for several seconds. But when he lifted his head again, there was determination and something else that Hrafn had never seen directed at him by anyone in his life.
Love.
Or, at least, he thought thatâs what it was, as it was how his friends looked at the men theyâd fallen for over the past few months. Sure he was wrong, for there was no way Teagan could have those feelings for him, Hrafn desperately wanted to run as far from the man as possible before he ended up humiliating himself further.
His legs actually twitched to do just that, but he found it impossible to look away from those pretty grey eyes. His whole life, Hrafn had prayed for someone to gaze at him like he was worthy of love. How was he to walk away from that?
âIâm not sure how to say this right, but please hear me out before you assume Iâm meaning something Iâm not, okay?â Teagan waited for Hrafnâs answer but he honestly wasnât sure what to reply.
In the end, he nodded, even though he really would rather have told Teagan heâd like to go back home and not speak about any of this ever again. He feared the worst.
