Another big moment in my life was my wedding day in April 2010 when I married Kieran Pearson.
* * *
I’d never been so happy finishing third.
My first race back in Europe was at one of my favourite tracks, in Monaco, on 22 July, and I was so excited to have that feeling of speed again.
I’d been nervous coming into the Diamond League meet and had actually asked my agent, Maurie Plant, how much prize money was paid for last place.
But I got out of the blocks well and was actually winning at the halfway mark. Then I felt Lolo Jones come up to me and, with a couple of hurdles to go, Danielle Carruthers also went past. That didn’t bother me as much as it would have previously, and I was happy with third in 12.76.
We’d delayed coming over to Europe for as long as possible because the Commonwealth Games weren’t until October. That still meant we were looking at a three-month stint overseas and, unlike the previous year, we decided to base ourselves in Cologne.
Athletics Australia booked a two-bedroom apartment for Sharon and me – Kieran was staying at home to get his business off the ground – but it turned out not to be what we’d expected. There were certainly two beds – but they were a metre apart from each other.
For nine weeks that was our living set-up, and it was no surprise that it put a strain on our already volatile relationship. Sharon was still running a business back home, so each night she’d be on her computer while I tried to sleep.
‘Stop clicking,’ I would yell at her constantly.
Sometimes she’d hide in the toilet with her computer so I wouldn’t be disturbed.
It was tough going, and it didn’t help that boredom was also a major issue. The facilities for training were ideal – the track was good and the gym was excellent – but there was nothing to do. I ended up counting down the days before each trip to the next race.
My next event on the Diamond League circuit – which was the renamed Golden League – was in Stockholm. After running 12.70 and finishing third in the heat, I produced my best performance for a long time by winning the final in 12.57 from Priscilla Lopes-Schliep and Lolo.
The wheels were starting to turn and I kept up the momentum over the next month by running consistently around the 12.6 mark. This was a huge breakthrough, because previously I’d been more up and down with my speed.
Priscilla was the form runner, and it wasn’t even frustrating me that I kept finishing second because I was just glad to be back in a positive frame of mind.
The Continental Cup – which had previously been known as the World Cup – was the main goal for the European trip, and it was being held in Split, Croatia. I was super excited, and it wasn’t just because of the $30,000 winner’s cheque. The prospect of getting away
