Thirty-Two Years Ago: 1982 - Ahe’ey

Viviane felt her sister’s despair, and she predicted the worst. She woke up in the middle of the night and ran to the lake, barefoot and in her nightgown. It was madness, but there was no one to stop her going to the aid of Gráinne. Marcus was away fighting the Hu’urei together with the Yi’ingo army.

Gráinne, stop, my dear sister. You need the moonstone to open the passage. In Viviane’s mind’s eye, she could see her sister holding her little daughter Fay in her arms. Gráinne was kneeling and touched the surface of the water, attempting to open the portal. The light emanating from the lake enveloped both mother and child.

Lake Do’oras was a passage between the two worlds. Ahe’ey was protected by a hexagonal force field that shielded its presence from the outside world. Humans were unable to see the large island that stood between the Caribbean and Bermuda.

The new Ahe’ey Island was an old outpost of the ancient Ahe’ey civilisation. Thousands of years ago, the mainland had been connected to several outposts through a series of passages that enabled the Ahe’ey to travel around the Earth quickly and with minimum environmental impact. These portals, made of pure water surfaces, allowed them to visit other species while causing little disruption. Throughout the millennium, the Ahe’ey had connected with humans, providing them with useful knowledge and resources appropriate to their evolutionary state.

The Ahe’ey were devastated every time they had to hopelessly watch a great human civilisation crumble due to the overexploitation of resources or disconnect between the short-term greed of their leaders and the long-term survival of their people. One after the other, the Ahe’ey had witnessed the doom of large communities that had substantial and yet unfulfilled potential. They had sometimes tried to intervene, but like many exasperated parents, they had learned quickly that there were lessons that needed to be experienced first-hand if learning was to occur.

Each passage had a guardian who ensured travellers exercised the utmost respect and compassion for all living creatures and that humans who found their way through the passages could be redirected back to their world as quickly as possible.

The most honourable and virtuous members of Ahe’ey, usually the elders or rulers of the land, could open and close each passage. They were called the gatekeepers.

The energy required by the gatekeepers to open a portal was such that many used the aid of a unique device, a moonstone ring that was passed from generation to generation. The ring acted as a magnifying device, multiplying the power of the gatekeeper and unleashing it to open the passage. Viviane was the current ring bearer, and she was the only one able to open the portal, which had been closed for many years.

There had been times in history when the portals were deliberately kept closed, the most recent one due to a Nazi crusade to find the origins of the Aryan race and the lost city of Atlantis. Hitler had become obsessed with the myths and stories that echoed the distorted history of Ahe’ey.
