CHAPTER 11
Nervousness followed me throughout the day—nervousness like a kid climbing the rungs of the highest diving board at the local pool, each plastic and aluminum step creaking under his fingers.
I’d been thinking a lot about pools lately. They haunted my dreams, filling them with wet, chlorinated hallucinations—not all of which were unpleasant. I’d close my eyes and see silhouettes in the dancing lights that escaped the surface of the water.
But today, the analogy served a different purpose. As I ascended the high dive, I felt the rush of adrenaline along with the buzz of danger. I’d never been up there and I wasn’t entirely sure what I’d do when I was.
Emily was up to something. I could see it in the way she stared at me that morning. It was almost palpable in her silence. When I saw her e-mail in my personal inbox, my suspicions were confirmed, although I still wasn’t sure what was going on. All I knew was that it would be more intense than yesterday. Crazier than the phone call. Things were escalating and it was Emily doing the escalating.
At the beginning of this whole game, it had been my own actions that drove things. I’d quizzed Ray about Emily. I’d set the two of them up so I could watch them flirt. I’d even been the one who convinced Emily that it was okay to flirt a little more. But now, it was Emily behind the wheel. She’d been behind it during our second night at Bar 88. She’d set up the phone call yesterday. And now...she was up to something.
I didn’t know how I felt about that—about losing control of something I barely had control of in the first place. It scared the shit out of me, yet I didn’t want to stop. We’d come this far. I wanted to see it through to the end, and as reluctant as Emily sometimes seemed to be, I think she wanted this, too.
I left work early, told Natalie that I needed to take a work conference call upstairs, and slipped into our bedroom.
I felt buoyed by my blood pressure, driven forward by that thump thump crashing between my ears. I didn’t need to pull up Emily’s instructions to know what to do—I’d read that e-mail again and again throughout the day—but it still felt surreal.
I set the computer on the desk in our bedroom and logged into Emily’s office conferencing system. My fingers shook as I typed in the password she’d given me. My gut churned when Emily popped onto the computer screen.
She must have touched up her make-up since she’d left home. Her lips seemed glossier. Her hair was brushed out. She was beautiful.
“I’m doing this for you, honey, so I hope you enjoy the show.”
She reached for the tie of her sea-green wrap blouse and eased it off her shoulder.
My eyes went wide. I glanced at the bedroom door, which was only half closed. I could hear the kids downstairs, playing with Natalie—thought about closing it, too, but didn’t want to miss a thing.
