Wren stood at the edge of the small wood, shivering in the bitter cold.

“What happened?” Jaime asked, approaching from the parking lot.

“Where are the cops?”

“I got rid of them. They’re just bored and looking to entertain themselves by rounding up some delinquent youths.”

“Thank you.”

“Where is she?”

“Still in the woods. She told me to leave.”

Jaime leaned against a large boulder, hiding their face inside a long, fluffy scarf. “Is she a…”

“Yeah. I… think she killed something.”

“It’s not a person, is it? If it is, I hope it’s my asshole boss.”

“It’s a deer.”

“Well, that’s not really that big of a deal, is it? It’s not like you’re a vegetarian.”

“No, it’s just…” Wren chewed on her lip, cracked from the freezing temperatures. “I don’t know. I don’t want to leave her in there alone, but she made it clear she didn’t want me there.”

“Should we stand guard? I got rid of the police, but you never know if a pair of hormonal teenagers are looking for somewhere to—”

“Ew.”

“It’s reality, Wren, and teenagers have big mouths. One of them posts it to their feed, before you know it the whole damn town is here.”

“You’d think it was too cold for that.”

“It’s never too cold for that when you’re determined enough. Alright, well, I’ll get the camping chairs from the trunk of the car. What should we do with the food?”

“I think she’s probably had her fill, now.”

“Excellent, more for me.” Jaime walked to the car, humming, their voice carrying gently across the snow-filled air. They returned with the chairs, food, and a thermos of tea.

“You brought a thermos?”

“I like to be prepared. I grew up in scouts.”

“How did you even have time to prepare that?”

Jaime popped the chairs’ legs into position and sat them on the snow. “Was already making tea when you called. Here, have a sip, you look half-frozen.”

“I feel it.”

“We should go by our place tomorrow, make sure the pipes haven’t burst.”

Wren groaned. “Why even tempt fate by saying that out loud?”

“Better than tempting it by ignoring the problem entirely, wouldn’t you agree?”

“I guess.” She took a sip of the tea, allowing its warmth to slide down her throat and into her core. “I didn’t like how she looked at me, Jaime.”

“What do you mean?”

“Angry, maybe. Almost feral.” She sighed. “Not like last time.”

“Maybe she just needs some time.”

“I don’t know how I didn’t realize that she works for Syndicorp. It was staring me in the face the entire time, and I missed it.”

Jaime shrugged. “It doesn’t matter, Wren. What’s done is done.”

“It’s not a done deal yet. Roanoak Falls might still have a chance.”

“If she’s the one heading it up, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. She has a good heart.”

“I know she does, but she’s not going to be the head honcho, you know? Hell, she’ll probably be out of here like a shot the second she has the chance.” Wren kicked at a large piece of gravel, sending it skittering into a bush. “She wanted to go already.
