Madex walked in on his squad, along with the three other faders from Bravo, Gamma, and Delta. The group was strategically gearing up for what seemed like war.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, where are you guys going?”

“Out there,” Rex said.

“Are you guys crazy, we barely made it back here.”

“That’s the point. Those avatars are carrying Super Pave Lows, everything else is EMP’d,” Aero said. “Unless we plan on running every time we’re out there, we better secure a ride before it’s too late.”

“You’re positive you can fly that thing?” Davis asked Aero.

“Bro, I can fly anything.”

“Can you guys just slow down for a second. We need to think this through and what about the rest of the squads?” Madex asked.

“No disrespect, but their strength lies in their abilities,” Chase said. “Abilities they currently do not have.”

“Come on, Madex, let’s be real, giving them a gun doesn’t make them one of us,” Chance said.

“Alright. Communications? mComs are shot,” Madex said.

Jet tugged at the black band wrapped around his neck, “We’re going old school with throat mics.”

An adjustable black band wrapped around the faders’ necks. Pushing against their throats was a circular device: the PTT (Push-To-Talk) throat mic. Attached to that was a cable that threaded itself into a portable radio holstered onto their chest. A quick disconnect wire was fed from the throat mic that also fed into a wrap around earphone.

“Our helmets are still shorted from the EMP so night vision, thermal, and magnification is useless. We’ll have to go portable with those options as well,” Trace said.

“Well, make sure you always have your helmets on regardless because you don’t want their infected blood going anywhere near your open orifices,” Madex said.

“You’re not coming?” Chase asked.

“Like you said, their strength lies in their abilities. Someone has to stay back and hold down the fort. What’s your frequency?”

“Five.”

Madex retreated from the underground armory.

“He’s different. Almost sympathetic,” Jet remarked.

Trace shouldered her retrofitted fifty caliber sniper rifle, “It’s a good look on him.”
