LUNA RAE

Ten days later.

“Okay, Miss Winter. Thank you so much for your time. We’ll keep in touch with you.”

“Okay. Thank you.”

I smile relaxed before I push to my feet. The woman rises out of her seat and rounds her desk.

Flashing a dazzling smile, she shows me to the door, where we say goodbye a moment later.

She invites the next job candidate in while I walk down the corridor.

A minute later, I thank the receptionist and saunter to the elevator.

My shoulders sag as the door pulls closed.

I’m not alone in the car, so I try to keep my composure until I exit the elevator, stroll across the hallway, and walk out of the building where several law firms have offices.

“Damn it…” I murmur, taking a few steps on the sidewalk and unbuttoning my neckline.

The wind blows in my hair. I untie my bun and let it drape down my shoulders.

Comprised of tailored pants and a slim-fit jacket, my suit is dark navy, and my dress shirt is white.

Classic combination––I thought I couldn’t go wrong with it.

I tried to impress.

“Luna?”

I turn around.

Frankie waves at me from a cab. I pivot and rush her way.

“Where are you going?” she asks.

“Um… I don’t know. I just finished a job interview. The next one is in two hours. I thought I’d kill some time in a bookstore.”

“Do you want to have lunch with me?”

“Sure. I thought you ate already.”

“Nope.”

She scoots over and makes room for me in the back.

Minutes later, we sit in a restaurant, waiting for our appetizers.

“Things good?” she asks, smiling.

I roll my eyes.

“Perfect. I have no money for rent and no job, but I’m eating in a restaurant.”

She laughs.

Buttering a slice of bread, I smile.

“It’s my treat,” she says.

I gesture.

“It’s not about that.”

“Any news?”

I lift my eyes.

“Job wise?”

“Mm-hmm.”

The server brings two bowls of soup to the table—creamy broccoli cheddar for me and lobster bisque for her.

I wait for the woman to pull away before I continue.

“I get glowing reviews and nothing else.”

“What do they like about you?”

“That’s a good question,” I say, sinking my spoon into my soup. “They like everything about me, yet it means nothing. Dozens of people apply for these jobs. What makes you think I’m special? They all want to work their way up the corporate ladder. Some of them have more experience than me.”

“Maybe you should look for something in a different line of work.”

“Like what?” I ask, chewing.

“Any firm. You can work your way up anywhere. They all have legal departments. You don’t need to start at a law firm.”

“Yeah… It makes sense. I’ll look into that. I’ll send more resumes tonight. Or call them. Or stalk them on social media.”

“You want to show them that you’re driven.”

I point to her with my spoon.

“That’s right,” I joke.

We laugh.

“Seriously, now. I want to earn money. Olivia keeps telling me I don’t need to worry. It’s not about that. I want to have my own money.”

“I hear you. I’m the same. I started tutoring on the side.”

“No way.”

Our eyes lock.
