âFOODâS ALMOST READY.â Cole returned to Rachelâs doorway a while later, after having cooked breakfast. Although, after the heartrending discovery that Missy had killed herself, Cole wasnât hungry.
But Rachelâs bed was empty.
Cole rushed into the room, checking the far side of the bed to see if sheâd fallen off again. Thatâs when he heard the water running in the shower.
âHow in the hellââ He pushed open the bathroom door and stepped into the steamy room ââdid you get in here?â Through the thin shower curtain, Cole could see Rachel sitting in the tub.
âI crawled in,â she admitted. âAfter discoveringâ¦you knowâ¦about Missy, I needed to.â
âYouâre going to give me a coronary. I came in and I thoughtâ¦â He didnât want to verbalize what heâd thoughtâthat heâd lost her. Cole sank onto the toilet. âYou are bound and determined to kill yourself.â
âDid you think Iâd gone out flying? No plane, remember?â There was something in her voice that Cole didnât want to hear.
âYouâre proud of this.â Cole inhaled a careful breath. âYou could have fallen like you did the first night we were home.â Cole should have followed his first inclination upon leaving the house for his run last night and kept going. He wasnât nursemaid material.
âBut I didnât.â
The frustration over Missyâs senseless death returned, blazing through his blood like a runaway fire. âDamn it, Rachel, those kids need you. I canât be responsible for you if youâre going to act like this.â
âI never asked you to be my keeper. You appointed yourself.â Stubborn, as usual.
âWhat would make you act like an adult with common sense? Would you like to be permanently strapped to a wheelchair? Because that could easily happen.â Cole was breathing as heavily as he did at the end of a run.
It took Rachel a moment to answer. âYou never used to talk to me like this.â
âIf you mean Iâve grown up, hell, yes. Iâm not the angry, hurt kid you knew. Iâm no longer tempting fate on a daily basis.â Stop, he told himself. Take a breath. This was about Rachel, not him. âEvery step you take endangers your life right now. Do not follow in Missyâs footsteps.â
âMy getting out of bed is not about Missy. Youâre a Hot Shot and you take a few risks of your own,â she countered.
âCalculated risks.â Rachel had to be the most maddening person he knew.
âItâs hard to calculate the risks with fire or with life. You take the hand youâre dealt and play it as best you can.â Rachel ran a hand up her face and over her hair, but with the shower curtain separating them he couldnât tell if she was crying or just wiping the water out of her eyes.
âThatâs what youâve done. Youâve decided youâve recuperated enough, so youâre playing your hand.â Too soon. If anything, she was bluffing about her strength.
âIf youâll give me some privacy, Iâll get out of the shower,â Rachel bargained, as if she were capable of climbing out of a slippery tub on her own.
