Christ, it was hotter in the workshop than the inside of the Devil’s kitchen on baking day. Farris wiped a sweaty forearm across his forehead and headed into the office to refill his water bottle. A flashing light on the telephone indicated a voicemail waiting. Thinking Violet had called, Farris hit the speaker button.

“Greg Mulson here. Sorry, but we’re going to have to cancel the cabinet order. Jennifer saw a redo on a show about flipping houses and wants to go in a different direction. You understand.”

What the ever-loving hell just happened?

Farris stared at the phone. He hit the repeat four times before the words sunk in. He pulled out a chair, slid his hat off his head and sat.

Holy freaking Christ! They were ruined. Obliterated. He wanted to vomit.

“What’s wrong with you?” Mike stood in the doorway with his water bottle in hand. “You drink too much last night after you left the house?”

Farris pointed to the phone.

Mike moved a little more cautiously as he hit the voicemail button and listened. When the call was over, he let out a string of profanities under his breath and lifted the receiver and hit redial.

“Mulson? Mike Dalton. While I am sympathetic to the decision to go in a new direction with home designs, we had a contract. We will stick by it and keep the money owed us for the work we’ve completed. You understand?”

Farris sat in awe. Mike Dalton had never been a hard nose when it came to dealing with customers. Not when there might be future business from them. Pride for his father and shame for himself warred with disbelief. He should have been the one to make that call and save face with Mike. No, instead he’d let another kick to the business gobsmack him into inaction.

Mike paused. His face grew to an unhealthy red. “Fine. Then I guess we’ll see you in court.”

Mike replaced the receiver with great care. “We better find ourselves a lawyer to look back over that contract.”

“We can’t afford a lawyer.” Farris watched Mike’s face. The only other time he’d seen that particular expression was the day they’d gotten Margery’s diagnosis with the term stage-four in front of it.

Mike rubbed his face then ran a hand behind his neck. “Ain’t worried about paying a lawyer; I’m more worried about paying the creditors.”

“Well, shit.” Farris leaned his head back and stared at the ceiling as if some inspiration from the heavens might blind him. It might just come down to the point of him having to put a second mortgage on his house. He had enough equity in it. The repairs might have to be put on permanent hold. He could also put it on the market and sell it outright and move back in with Mike.

He stood.

“Where you going?” Mike watched Farris as he headed to the door.

“No reason to hang around here today. Thought I’d go up to Georgia and help Violet pack.”

“You’ll be better off telling her to look for work elsewhere.
