The fish was cooked perfectly. I loaded up two plates with food, making sure to give Holden an extra-large portion. I’d sent him out onto the patio with a bottle of wine. He’d just finished uncorking it when I came through the French doors.

“That looks really good,” Holden remarked. “I rarely get a home-cooked meal so this is a treat. Thank you.”

“Sure,” I said with a smile.

The meal was mostly silent, except for Holden’s occasional praise of my cooking skills. He cleaned his plate, then kicked back from the table and faced the bayou.

“So, how did this become your home?” he asked.

“This place has been in our family for generations. My dad, who was an only child, inherited it from his father, who was an only child, so now it will go to me, another only child.”

“Why don’t your parents live here with you? The place certainly seems spacious enough.”

“Holden, you remember my parents, right?” He laughed at my comment. “All kidding aside, they prefer to travel. They lived in Maine for a while and then they were going to live in the guest house.” I pointed to the old converted carriage house. “But, they decided to buy the RV and travel the country instead.”

“You must miss them,” he remarked.

“I do, at times. My mom is funny. She blames everything I do on my father.”

“I remember.”

“My dad is great. He’s pretty quiet, but he’d do anything for you.”

“I’m sorry the circumstances were so bad. I’d have liked to get to know them better.”

“Well, I didn’t tell you this before, but I appreciate that you helped with them.”

“Not a problem. I was glad to help.”

“My mom wanted to stay behind, but I couldn’t have handled that so soon after losing Pete,” I said. Holden nodded.

“I can relate,” he said.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked curiously.

“It means that I know what you’re talking about.”

“Why, Holden Dautry! Were you about to share something personal with me?” I leaned forward in my chair. He shot me a look.

“This sarcasm thing—something you do often?”

“All of the time,” I answered. He shook his head.

“Yes, I know what it’s like to have an overbearing mother.”

“Are you an only child?” I asked before I took a sip of wine.

“Yes, my brother died when I was six, so you can probably imagine what life was like for me.”

“I’m sorry. What happened, if you don’t mind my asking?”

“He was killed by a drunk driver. He was nine and he and my dad were on their way back from a baseball game. I was supposed to be with them, but my mom didn’t want me to go because I’d been running a fever the day before. I stayed home with her. I remember the police officer coming to the door to break the news to us. I was more fascinated by the shiny badge and gun than the words that were coming out of his mouth. They never caught the guy who did it. My dad spent years in and out of hospitals, and my mom had him to take care of, so I tried to become independent.
