“Officer Wright, hi, Austin Jacobsen,” Austin said in greeting. “I have records from the ranch concerning the cattle. I can email or fax them.”
Behind Austin, Zander was pacing. John, thank goodness, was out doing his morning chores. With any luck Austin hoped to have the whole mess cleared up before lunch and the cattle on their way to their destination.
Officer Wright rattled off a fax number and Austin jotted it down. “I’ll get this paperwork sent. Is there anything else we need to provide?”
“No. Once we can prove ownership your trucks will be released,” Officer Wright stated, and his radio buzzed in the background.
“Any idea about the person that called in?” Austin asked. Someone out there knew what they were doing and had gone out of their way to cause problems. He damn sure wanted to know who it was, and Zander deserved to know.
“Not at the moment, but rest assured, we’ll be looking further into this matter.”
“Let me know if you need anything else. I’ll wait to hear from you,” Austin said politely, and ended the call.
John entered with Dean no less irritated than earlier in the morning when they stormed into his bedroom. “Well? What the fuck?”
Austin shoved his phone into his pocket, no longer worried that the problem began on his end. “Once they receive this paperwork and prove ownership they’ll let the trucks go.”
“About fucking time,” John muttered, and fell back into a chair.
Austin liked John, but John had an irrational side, a side that didn’t seem to stop and take into consideration all the variables. From the beginning John placed blame on Austin, jumping to conclusions. Sure, Austin was the new guy on the ranch and they didn’t really know him well, but it wasn’t a good excuse.
“John.” Austin fought the temptation to tell the guy to fuck off. “I realize you don’t know me very well, but I’ve been brokering cattle for years, my father for more than thirty. I know it’s easy to blame me, but you’ve busted my balls over this since sunrise.”
John sat up a little straighter in his chair and scrunched up his brows in a “do you dare call me out?” sort of way. “And?”
“It has occurred to me that in all actuality this shit isn’t my fault,” Austin stated, and felt his temperature rise. Cole was stuck out in the middle of nowhere and Austin was defending himself to this dick when he really wanted to be out helping Cole.
“Oh, yeah? How do you know?” John stood up. His fingers seemed to beg for the go ahead to form fists and ready for a fight. “Funny, you came up with this plan to begin with.”
“Calm the fuck down.” Dean put himself between John and Austin. “Without a name of who called in and said the cattle were stolen to begin with we don’t know a damn thing. Pointing fingers and getting pissed off won’t get us anywhere.”
Zander cursed when his cell beeped. “This shit is getting out of control.
