I found it hard to get to sleep that night. I fought the urge to get up and look out my window. I was amazed at how I could miss someone so much, even though I thought he hated me just a day or so ago. I finally grabbed a book and drifted off after a few pages.
We were back at Centennial Park and sitting close to the security booth like we always did. I had promised my mom thatâs where we would stay while we watched Gone with the Wind. Ginny got up during her favorite scene and started walking towards someone whose face I couldnât see. She ignored me when I called her, so I got up to follow her but she was gone. When I looked back at our picnic blanket, someone else was there. It took my eyes a few moments to focus but pretty soon I made out the face. Miles.
My eyes shot open as I felt a surge of panic take over. It took me a moment to catch my breath and calm my heartbeat. I glanced at the clock and it read 3:47 am. I knew there was no way Iâd be able to fall back to sleep so I switched my light on and opened my computer. I decided Iâd read up on spirit attachment again. I found the name and number of a book store downtown and planned to pay it a visit to see what books I could find on the topic. I hoped that Iâd get some answers. I saw a slight movement out of the corner of my eye and when I looked up it was Ginny. I was so relieved I almost forgot myself and said her name out loud. I had so many questions about where she had been.
âI have been worried sick.â As soon as I said it, I realized how parental I sounded. I got up and we both went into the bathroom.
âSomething was here the other day, and it kept me from coming in. One minute I was in the window seat, and the next I was outside, but you couldnât see me.â
âAnd you could see me?â
âKissing Brody on the porch? Yes,â she said with a smirk. I rolled my eyes at her. Of course sheâd see that. âI could hear the house being torn up, but no one was there, Hadley. What could do that? I canât move anything.â The possibilities were too frightening to name. I felt nauseated just thinking of them.
âI donât know, Ginny. I donât know.â And that was the truth. I thought about the bookstore I planned to visit and hoped it would lead me in the right direction. I didnât want to go into too much detail with her just yet. We sat there in silence before she spoke again.
âSo, is he a good kisser?â
âI donât have much to compare him to, but since he made my knees turn to jelly then yes, I would say so.â
âHeâs dark and mysterious.
