“Hey, Marion.”
Glancing up from the files in front of her, Marion saw Jacob Meyers, one of the interns, standing in the doorway. Meyers was young and his hair was longer than Turnbull was comfortable with.
“There’s a guy out here to see you. He looks like a bum or a mugging victim.”
“Does he have a policeman accompanying him?”
“No.”
Marion doubted that Turnbull would run another case at her at the moment. The D.A. had been adamant about the murder investigation taking up all of her available time for the foreseeable future.
So if it wasn’t a victim coming to report a crime, who was it?
“What do you want me to do?” Meyers asked.
Marion stood and walked around the desk. “I’ll take care of it, Jake. Thanks.”
Adam Gracelyn sat perched on a desk in the outer office. And he did look like a mugging victim. His suit was disheveled and his face was bloody and bruised. His left eye had nearly swollen shut.
The silence in the office was immediately noticeable. Normally the typewriter keys banged incessantly as reports and forms were filled out and filed. Every eye in the room was on Adam.
Marion went over to him, started to touch him, then drew back because she was afraid she’d hurt him if she did.
“It’s not so bad.” Adam tried to grin, then winced in pain. “Okay, it’s pretty bad.”
“What happened?”
“Long story. But I need to tell it. If you’ve got time.”
Across the room, Turnbull glared at Adam from the doorway of his office. The district attorney chewed on an unlit cigar with grim determination.
“Maybe I should have called ahead,” Adam said. Pain tightened his mouth. “But I wasn’t sure if you’d have taken my phone call.”
“After that stunt you pulled this morning, I probably wouldn’t have.” Marion folded her arms and stared at him. She knew she wasn’t going to win any friends in the district attorney’s office by taking Adam in.
“That’s why I came instead.” Adam’s eyes softened. “This is important, Marion. To me and to you.”
Marion believed him. She sighed. “All right. Come into my office.”
Adam got up painfully and limped through her door.
“Betty,” Marion called to one of the receptionists.
“Yes, ma’am,” Betty replied. She was in her early thirties, plump and prim, with her hair pulled back into a bun that made her look even older and more severe.
It had been odd for Marion being called ma’am by someone who was just a few years older than she was. But that was part of the respect that fueled the district attorney’s office.
“Do we have a first-aid kit?” Marion asked.
“Yes, ma’am. A good one.”
“Could you bring it to me?”
“Yes, ma’am.” Betty got up from her desk and headed for the storeroom.
Although she knew she was going to regret it, Marion glanced at Turnbull. The district attorney shook his head in disgust, turned and stalked back into his office.
Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, Marion thought glumly.
