Chapter 17

Devon swung the passenger door open. “Where you headed?” She tried to catch her breath.

“I know a place.” He started his truck. “Want to follow me?”

Follow? Yes, it wouldn’t be good to further add fuel to the fire. She jumped in the Jeep and trailed his white pickup until they reached the end of Main Street. He kept going when it turned into a gravel road that stretched off into the hidden distance. The road grew narrower and the vehicle bounced over the rough terrain. She shifted gears to make it up a steep incline, at the top of which sat a solitary house that Kerr pulled in front of.

Devon stared in awe through her windshield. A stone house with twin chimneys towering over each end lay in front of her. The white railings of the porch that wrapped around the front offset the gray of the stones.

“Well?” Kerr held the door open as she entered.

“Wow,” she whispered when she stepped into the large open living room. With its big screen TV nestled in the corner along with a fireplace and comfy sofa and recliner, it was a world away from anything she’d seen since coming to Shell Island. A large island separated the room from the kitchen with its granite countertops and stainless steel fixtures. Along the opposite wall sat a dining nook with a large wooden table and benches on either side. She ogled the cathedral ceiling. “Did you build this yourself?”

“It took me three years.”

“And you cook?”

“I live alone. I better know how to do something besides boil water.”

She ran her hand along the smooth wood of the carved table. “I’m shocked. I pinned you for a hermit living in a cave overlooking the ocean.”

He pointed toward the sliding doors that led to the back deck. “Just past the woods is the bluff overlooking Cave’s Cove. On a good night, you can hear the waves crashing.” He took a slow breath. “But you can always smell the salty air.” He moved toward her. “Now, where were we?”

Kerr cupped her face and kissed her. His tongue raked her teeth as it entered her mouth. Her hands fell to the button of his jeans, unsnapped it, and pulled the zipper down.

“No.” He seized her hands. “I’m going to take my time with you.”

With his pants gaping open, he trudged over to the door and locked it. There would be no more interruptions.

Kerr took her hand and led her down a corridor with two small bedrooms and a bathroom along the side. At the end stood a single door that opened into a room as spacious as the kitchen and living room combined. The second stone fireplace towered in the middle of the far wall.

“Is this your secret lair?” she teased when she noticed the hand carved king sized bed on the opposite end. “Am I the only who’s seen it?”

“You ask too many questions.” He kissed her again and pulled her shirt over her head. Her bikini top landed on the floor next to it seconds later.
