Chapter VI

“So, doctor, how do things look right now?” asked Luke’s mother. She was a lot more vocal than I ever remember her being. “Monét, you asked for your mother, so Luke tried to call her, but no one picked up. Do you have another number so we could reach her?” she asked. “No” I responded turning over.

I hadn’t spoken to my mother in months. I remember the last conversation we had, and sadly I hadn’t really thought about my mother in all of this time. I didn’t want to explain this whole situation to everyone in the room so I just said, “Oh, well I think they are in Europe right now. I’ll call her when we get home and settled.” That seemed to satisfy them because no one spoke of my mother again.

At the sound of my mother’s name, the monitors went crazy. The doctor frowned at me. “Alright, all guests must exit the room.” He announced. Everyone started to protest at once, demanding that they be allowed to stay in the room. The doctor came in the room and announced that it was time for me to be left alone. He told Luke’s mother that she was welcome to stay in the hospital waiting room, but I had preeclampsia and if my blood pressure wouldn’t stabilize they would have to remove the baby via surgery.

He turned the lights off and told me to lie on my left side for the duration of the evening. He gave the nurses instructions to not feed me anything and not give me anything to drink. It was pure torture. He turned to me and said, “Just in case” as he slowly walked out of the room.

Luke snuck in the hospital room, and sat in the chair next to me. “Monét, are you okay?” he asked. “I’m fine. Sorry for scaring you.” I responded. “I thought I had lost you.” He said as tears slid down his cheek. I don’t know how long he stayed in the room with me.

I don’t know when I fell asleep, but I was jolted awake by loudly beeping monitors. My doctor came rushing into the room telling me that they were prepping me for surgery. Surgery I was terrified. I started crying. Luke was standing next to me, “Don’t cry. I will be right by your side.” He said as the nurse ushered him into a room to change into scrubs. The next time I awoke, I was lying down with a tall blue curtain, separating the bottom half of me from view. Luke was sitting down next to me with his head resting on my shoulder. “Monét, please be okay.” He kept whispering in my ear.

After some tugging and pulling I heard the sweetest sound in the world, my baby cry. He cried so loud and long. I heard the nurse’s remark about how much hair he had. Luke couldn’t wait to see him. He jumped up from the chair and walked over to the nurse to help them cut the umbilical cord and clean the baby.
