Chapter Thirteen

Farma de Pasari, Arian’s farm...

“So, lover boy got you out of jail. Good call, Izolda. I have to admit, I didn’t think he would bother. Over the years, he made it no secret that he couldn’t have cared less about you. In fact, he never mentioned your name once you married his nemesis.”

“If you phoned to regurgitate lost causes, you’re wasting my time.” Izolda peeked into the hallway outside her room, checking that no one was listening. Closing the door, she went to stand on the balcony overlooking the Dniester River. Arian had bought the farm a couple of weeks prior to the world exploding around them ten years ago. She had never been here but still; she couldn’t help feeling a surge of pride in what he had achieved... except for the criminal aspect of his life.

She cringed at the thought. Who was she to cast aspersions, primarily since she had married Sidorov with the knowledge of who and what he was—a malevolent, venal character unmatched by Arian. And she was no better than either of them. Yes, Boris had blackmailed her into this life, but she had been the one to make the choice. She could have walked away, disappeared—forced his hand perhaps. In fact, going through with the threat to kill Arian would have come to nothing if she had fled for good. Why didn’t she? Ghosting the bastard was something she was too afraid to do at the time.

Over the years, she had learned just how much power the Guzuns held in the criminal world. Boris would never have dared for fear of retribution. She had been naive—a fool. Boris knew this and played upon her fears.

“My apologies but you have to agree, Arian’s actions are contradictory to his feelings.”

“What do you want?” Izolda was fast becoming impatient. She had been furious when one of the gardeners had approached her on her morning walk and handed her the sat phone. Another traitor under Arian’s roof. If only she had never become involved, accepted her fate and lived out her miserable life as Boris’ wife. Instead, she had signed a contract with the devil.

“I want to know if you’re still onboard with the next part of our plan. It has been a very costly exercise to protect you over the past four years, Izolda. You know as well as I do that if Boris ever found out that you and I were conspiring against him, he wouldn’t have hesitated to personally cut your throat long before I found that loophole in your marriage contract to get you the divorce you craved.”

“For that I’m grateful but like Boris, you spun another cocoon of malice around me. Tell me. What have I gained by siding with you in this power struggle? It certainly isn’t the freedom you promised. All I was able to achieve was to have one oppressor succeed the former with both intent on using me for their own selfish gain.”

“The difference, my dear, is that once I achieve my goal, you will be free.
