Fabrication and the Press

The examples above show how a made-up story as a hoax can be fun and mostly harmless. But a serious, fabricated story in the newspaper or on the TV news can be hurtful and ruin someone’s reputation. Journalists can sometimes be tempted to fabricate stories because their editors expect them to produce many stories on very tight deadlines. Also, they are under pressure to tell stories that grab the public’s attention. Most journalists honor the ethics of their trade and would not think of deceiving their readers. But on occasion, a journalist who cannot find a good story, or refuses to look for one, will simply invent one. Oddly enough, fabricating a good story can sometimes take as much time as searching for a genuine one.

Journalists who have been caught claim they have fabricated stories for many reasons. Some of them wanted to make their pieces more interesting and shocking, even if they were not true. Some of them made up great stories to win prizes and promotions and to earn pay raises.

Present-day journalism, both print and broadcast (radio and television), involves a lot of money, as well as millions of readers and viewers. There is strong competition to grab those readers and viewers. Sometimes journalists as fabricators cross a line of dishonesty that they cannot uncross.
