Weight-Loss Surgery

In spite of efforts to avoid fad diets, follow a healthy eating plan, and increase activity, some people simply do not lose weight. Indeed that has been true for numerous adults and young people who are classified as morbidly obese. What is morbid obesity? The term is applied to those who are extremely overweight—one hundred pounds over their ideal body weight. However, “the accepted definition currently is by BMI, which has to be forty or above if obesity is the only problem,” says Shyam Dahiya, MD, who specializes in surgical treatment of the morbidly obese at the Bellflower Medical Center in Southern California. He adds that people “may be seen as morbidly obese if they have a BMI of thirty-five or higher and also have obesity-related health problems such as sleep apnea (disturbed breathing that interrupts sleep), hypertension (high blood pressure), or Type II diabetes.”1

Someone who is severely obese may suffer from a chronic condition in which symptoms of the problem build slowly. Morbid obesity is then difficult (and sometimes impossible) to treat through diet and exercise alone. After many attempts to lose weight, some morbidly obese people seek a last resort: bariatric surgery, more commonly called weight-loss surgery. The term bariatric stems from Greek words meaning “weight” and “treatment.”
