I blinked and almost let Looris out from my grasp. I was still out of sync with the world after the teleport as Looris struggled to get free of my grip. I barely managed to hang on as he writhed and squirmed. I focused just as he kicked the dagger from my hand. I still had my sword.

We were on a windy hillside but I didn’t stop just then to take a look at the scenery. Looris was kicking at me and snarling. I held on to him even as he seemed to unleash his abjuration on me, pain shooting through my body, a million needles stabbing at me. In that moment of pain I was grateful he wasn’t a better abjurer or I’d be dead by now. As it was I barely hung onto him.

Looris kicked the sword out of my hand with surprising strength. He tried to get away by pulling back but I grabbed the Eye, pulling until it came off his neck with a snap. The last of Looris’ sanity went with it. He let out some incoherent babble and charged at me, growling and barking like a rabid dog. I took out another dagger and stabbed him. Looris stiffened and gasped before falling to the ground, dead.

I took my dagger out of Looris and wiped it clean on his clothes. I searched him but didn’t find anything interesting. I looked at the Eye of the Spider and saw within a thousand, a million world’s worth of power awaiting me if I just let it out. I shivered and pocketed it. That thing was... was... something I didn’t want to deal with. I couldn’t deal with it. Even in my pocket I could feel it doing something I couldn’t describe. I needed a better place to keep it.

I also needed to destroy it. There was no way either Xander or Gavin, if he was involved in all this, were going to get the Eye. After I got my bearings maybe the simple act of smashing it to pieces would work. I had a feeling it would need something more powerful, like a volcano to drop it in. Maybe I didn’t have to go that far—I hoped I didn't have to go that far. I retrieved my sword and sheathed it and retrieved my other dagger.

I looked around. Like I said before I was on a windswept hillside, tall grass rippling in the wind around me. To my left I saw ridges of pine trees ending at the base of tall, rocky mountains. To my right the hillside was part of a vast meadow that descended to another pine forest. Beyond them I could see a valley and maybe buildings in the distance. I set off down the hill.
