Chapter Nineteen
Sira set the plate of ham and fried potatoes on the table in front of her father. He'd come home at last, and seeing the table already set for dinner, went straight to it without talking. His face was stone hard, and his eyes cold as river pebbles. He kept his mind and emotions locked away from her, but Sira could read his body language well enough. He was still angry, and preparing himself to fight.
"How did your meeting go?" Sira dished her own plate and sat down. She knew she had to give him His Majesty's message, but wasn't sure how. If she admitted she'd talked to DeWheat, she'd have to admit she'd left the safety of the property.
"Well enough." He snatched the linen napkin off the table and spread it on his lap. "I've convinced five others to join me. Two more are considering."
"You can't really fight His Majesty with just eight of you?" Sira had read the histories. Hundreds had been involved in the war that had brought DeWheat to power.
Her father slapped the table so hard a crack appeared beneath his palm. The thunder of it echoed through the house. "I will not let him take you. We must not lose who we are to the human world. His plan will destroy us. All our ways will be lost, our blood thinned and polluted by intermarriage with humans. He thinks he knows best, but he's wrong."
"Maybe you don't have to fight him." Sira stuffed the hot potatoes in her mouth, letting the flavor of salt and garlic build her courage. She had to speak.
His eyes narrowed at her. "What do you mean?"
"His Majesty came by while you were gone." Her hand shook on her fork, forcing her to set it down.
"Impossible. He couldn't get through my shields." He looked like he might hit the table again, and Sira winced.
"I went out to talk to him."
Her father opened his mouth and then closed it. A blanket of brown power smothered the room.
"He said he wanted to speak to you. He thinks you two can work things out. He told me to tell you to meet him at The Grove. He doesn't want a war. I think he'll just let me stay home from school. That's what you wanted isn't it?" Sira let the words rush out of her. Get it over with. Get it done. She had no idea how her father would react.
Her father rose, his plate of food forgotten on the table. His aura flared a darker, deep-soil black. "This isn't just about you. It's so much more than that. We need to decide once and for all what to do about the human problem."
"But humans aren't bad," Sira blurted out before she could stop herself. "Carla and her mother are nice to me. They're my friends. There's no reason to hate them. No reason to stay away from them. And school was great. I mean, I wasn't really used to it, but I learned so much.
