CHAPTER 26

THE REFUGEES:

THE ESCAPE

Bilaluna (Beeutee’s reign, two rulers in the past)

ANTEBON CAME TO as she felt cold water dousing her face. She shook herself, startled by the sight of the raging river next to Bilaluna’s wormhole entrance. “Lieutenant, where are we? What happened?” She coughed and tried to get her bearings. Tell me our troops are okay.

Her lieutenant lifted her to her pods. “The nuclear blast blew us over the edge of the crater. Radioactive clouds were approaching, and I ordered everyone through the wormhole.” The lieutenant pointed in the colony’s direction. “We’re on Bilaluna now, and I’m taking you to see Queen Beeutee.”

“Lieutenant Obsidiant, you saved us all. The clouds would have poisoned us for sure. Did everyone make it?” She emanated a fluffy fragrance of pride and concern. I am forever in your debt.

“We are all here, although the fall injured many, and there are three that perished.” The lieutenant pointed to their bodies. “We brought them here for burial.”

“That was not only thoughtful but strategic.” Antebon patted her lieutenant on the back. “By bringing everyone, Rustant will not know of our escape, and he’ll assume the blast incinerated us all.” She smiled warmly at the soldier. Your actions have saved us and fooled Rustant.

“I had to act fast, and my motives were based on empathy, not a strategy,” replied the lieutenant.

“Well, regardless of your reasons, your quick actions saved many and concealed our getaway. I’m sure the families of the fallen will be grateful as well.” Antebon smiled. “I will recommend you to the Queen for the highest commendation.” And I’ll never forget your bravery. I believe you truly deserve it.

“Thank you, Captain.” The lieutenant bowed to his superior. “I just did what anyone else would under the circumstance.”

“No, not all soldiers react with valor and wisdom under duress.” Antebon returned the bow. “And thank you for saving my life and the surrounding dozens.” His actions moved her, and a sudden attraction overcame her. I believe this ANT is a hero!

Obsidiant smiled and motioned for Antebon to follow the river towards the colony and the Queen’s palace. They marched downstream for about a hexour, and the Queen’s patrol met them. The lieutenant spoke to the guard and introduced Antebon. The guard captain escorted them to the palace and arranged for Antebon to have an immediate audience with the Queen.

Queen Beeutee looked down at Antebon, who was resting in a chair when she entered the hall. “Antebon, you must be exhausted, injured, and soiled by your fall.” She waved to her attendant. “I will call for our medic to see you. And then have my attendant draw you a warm bath.”

“Please, no fuss. I only bumped my head. I am okay now.” Antebon bowed before the Queen. “But please have your medic check over our troops. Some are injured worse than me.” She smiled. “I will take you up on the warm bath, though. That’s just what I need.” Antebon looked the monarch up and down. She gaped in a state of awe.
