Chapter Nineteen

Demitri is not Drake

“What am I like in your reality?” Demitri asked as he raided Mrs. Publey’s refrigerator. Gavyn and Lena were across the street fighting the baddies. It seemed that Demitri was the only person willing to put up with my one-armed shenanigans.

Just thinking about Drake made me smile. Where to begin? Maybe with his gigantic comic book collection or his affinity for super hero boxers or his ability to quote the entire Lord of the Rings movie dialogue verbatim. I thought about his scrawny shoulders and arms. He’d barely passed Phys Ed. I trailed my eyes from Demitri’s black hair down to his boots. (Apparently everyone had badass boots here.) “He’s...um...different.”

Demitri chuckled and set a package of lunch meat on the counter. “Well, that sounds promising.” He set to work making ham and cheese sandwiches. I inspected the flecks in the marble countertop. It was incredible how much we all differed from reality to reality. I’d never really thought about it before, but I guess I assumed we’d all be alike or at least have similar hopes and dreams. I was pretty sure this Demitri didn’t aspire to be a full-time Comic-Con attendee.

“The two of you are very different.”

Demitri pushed a sandwich across the counter to me. “And you know this how? You met me three hours ago.” His dark eyes sparkled. I tried to remember if I’d ever seen Drake’s eyes sparkle like that—like they had secrets and desires and dirty thoughts. The centers of his irises were gold and darkened deeply at the outer edges. Fathomless, I decided.

“Gavyn?”

“Hmm?” I shook myself as if coming out of a trance.

Demitri’s face was split by a huge smile. “I said ‘do you want a pickle’?”

“Oh. Yes, please.” Demitri lopped one onto the paper plate. I took a bite of the sandwich and chewed thoughtfully. The sudden onslaught of food made my stomach gurgle. It’d been a couple of days since I’d had a real meal. Probably the last time I ate with Liam. Not that I made a habit of keeping anything in my stomach. It always liked to make encore appearances.

Demitri took the stool next to mine. “I’m sorry Lena is such a bitch. She hasn’t always been this awful. Promise.” He took a huge bite of his sandwich.

I lifted one shoulder. “It’s okay.”

“No, really.” He’d set his sandwich down. “It’s not okay. She’s been through a lot lately, but we all have. It doesn’t give her an excuse to act like that.”

“Thanks.” I took another bite. I wondered what things she’d survived, other than war, fighting, and murdering. We all were thrown into the middle of that, most of us unwillingly.

An awkward silence stretched between Demitri and me that we filled with methodical biting, chewing, and swallowing. Before either of us had to brave speaking, Gavyn and Lena strolled into the house. Lena was covered in fine red mist that I recognized as the leftovers of a blasted body. “Who’d you kill?” I asked.

“Nevin,” Gavyn said, grinning.
