Chapter 15

“Where are we sitting?” Bella stepped off the escalator outside of the Moody Theater on West Willie Nelson Boulevard in downtown Austin.

Luke glanced at the tickets he had just picked up from will call as they moved with the crowd flowing through the open foyer toward the entrance. “Mezzanine number four.”

They passed the ticket taker, who directed them to an usher. Luke showed her the tickets.

“You are on level two, premium theater seating. Mezzanine four is right in the center, and you are in row one. Excellent seats.” She smiled, handed the tickets back to Luke, and indicated an elevator behind her. “This elevator will take you there. Enjoy the show.”

“Thanks.” He turned to Bella. “Guess Nick came through.”

They exited the elevator and walked to the side, where there were several high-top tables near one of the bars that lined the outside wall of the second level.

Luke pointed. “There’s the gang. Come on.” He put his arm around her waist in an unconscious show of possessiveness as they walked to the tables.

“Hey, Nick. You remember Bella?”

Nick, dressed in his usual jeans, T-shirt, and leather jacket, stood and embraced her. “I do. It’s good to see you again. And this lovely lady is Jamie.”

“Nice to meet you.” Jamie smiled. When she stood, she towered over Bella.

“You too,” Bella said, returning the other woman’s friendly smile.

“And you remember Justin?” Luke asked.

Bella nodded even though he was five years older and had barely paid attention to his brother’s little friend. When they were freshmen in high school, he had already graduated and gone away to college. But everyone who lived in the area knew his reputation as a Texas Ranger. He was like a pit bull when he was on the trail of a criminal, and when he made an arrest, it stuck. She’d seen him around the courthouse more than she had seen him when they were younger. They had even been on opposite sides during several cases.

Justin and a very beautiful woman stood. They made a striking couple, both tall, blond, and tanned. “Sure, we’ve bumped heads a few times,” he said, but the warmth in his eyes softened his words. “And this is my fiancée, Lori Roberts.”

“Congratulations on your engagement,” Bella told him, and to Lori she added, “Luke brought some of your wine over last Saturday. It was delicious.”

“Thank you. Drop by the vineyard anytime. I’ll give you a tour,” Lori promised.

“How did you manage to get such great seats at the last minute?” Luke asked Nick.

Nick chuckled. “I didn’t. They were all sold out. But Grammy is a longtime supporter of the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, and she was able to get us these. Not bad, huh?”

“Where’s your partner tonight?” Luke asked his brother, referring to Harley. “I thought you two were inseparable.”

“I was afraid someone would get strawberries in their drinks, and all hell would break loose,” Nick admitted. “Jamie’s brother is babysitting him tonight.”

Everyone settled back into their seats while Luke pulled a chair out for Bella.
