Chapter Twenty

The sun beat down on Kade as he parked his motorcycle back at the resort, in the exact same spot it had been before he’d left—like someone had saved it for him because they’d known he’d be back.

Just like you knew you would, St. James.

Shut up, asshole.

Great. Now he was not only talking shit to himself but he was responding, too. Usually, he only did that when he had five chapters to go in a book and was writing pretty much twenty-four seven because the words were just flowing in a rush to the final scene. But he wasn’t writing. He was back at the resort in the middle of nowhere Wyoming, walking somewhere, but God knew where. He sure as fuck didn’t.

His brain had all but checked out for the moment as he strode down the path, not headed to anywhere in particular but knowing he had to move or he just might explode.

And he didn’t stop until he was back where they’d held sunrise yoga the other day. Today it was cordoned off for some bridesmaid activity that Thea was supposed to be at. Instead, the place was empty except for some abandoned dolls and a skeleton production crew. He ducked back behind a tree before they spotted him.

He’d known there’d be a camera crew here—exactly what he was trying to avoid. So why was he here?

“You look like you’re about to go find a buffalo to fight,” said a familiar voice from behind him.

Yeah. That’s right. Thea.

He hadn’t planned it. Didn’t mean to be here. Still, his feet had taken him right where he wanted to be—with her. Fuck. There was no way that was a good thing.

“That option seems as good as any other,” he grumbled as he turned around, more than a little annoyed at himself for even subconsciously wanting what he shouldn’t.

She was holding a doll and wearing a ridiculous T-shirt with an illustration of a doll on it that hung loose on her and had him thinking about way too many tempting fantasies focusing on how easy it would be to slip his hands underneath. Her hair was back in her usual ponytail, and he flexed his fingers in an effort to distract himself from the idea of just how good it would feel to wrap the silky strands around his fist. Then there was her smile, as bright as the perfect spring morning that made him feel all soft and warm inside.

All of those things individually were more temptation than a man like him was built to withstand. Together? It just pissed him off, because there was no denying the fact that walking away from Thea Pope at the end of this wedding nightmare was going to suck.

“You know, in therapy, I’m learning how to be mindful and weigh my options,” she said, walking over so that she was next to him, her light, summery scent wrapping around him like the softest of bindings. “Maybe it’s something you should consider—playing with something more enjoyable than a two-thousand-pound animal with horns and a bad attitude.
