Chapter Eleven

We didn’t do much sleeping in the motel we stayed at that night. The place was infested with bugs and we were both on edge, holding our breath every time we saw headlights outside the window of our room. We laid on top of the covers, fully dressed--shoes and all--and kept our guns close. We didn’t say much either. There had been too much excitement that night and we were both exhausted. Questions could wait until morning.

When morning did come, we were up early and moving. Demitri said he wanted to go see a man about a cheap car, explaining he wanted to get something cash to take down to the cabin, something nobody could trace through bank transactions. I made a jab about how maybe it was smart of me to avoid electronic transactions all together and he told me to shut up. There was nothing wrong with a little online shopping, he insisted.

We caught another ride and made our way to the address Demi had copied off his phone onto a piece of paper before wiping the device and tossing it into a nearby dumpster. I doubted anyone knew about my phone but I did the same anyway, just in case. We could pick up burners somewhere. It wasn’t like I was losing any important numbers or photos. I didn’t have those.

The car we were buying was a circa 1990s Volvo with rusted paint and mismatched parts. It was hideous but Demi didn’t seen to care. On the contrary, he seemed pretty pleased with it’s unsettling appearance. It was something no one would ever imagine him driving, he said, so it was perfect so long as it ran. The man who sold it to us was middle aged, explained that his father was a mechanic and had bought it as a personal project but he’d gotten sick and never finished. He insisted the engine was completely rebuilt and that the only issues with it were cosmetic. We paid him a little over a thousand dollars cash and were on the road by ten.

“So where’s this cabin?” I asked, slumping in my seat and picking at my nails as I had a habit of doing.

“Bum fuck nowhere.” Demi answered.

“Huh...you own it?”

“Yeah. I bought it a while back, in case of things like this. I have a few. They’re nothing fancy or anything but no one will find us there. It’ll give me time to figure out what the hell is going on.”

“You really don’t have any idea?”

“Your guess is as good as mine. Last I checked, everyone I work with was on good terms with me. I haven’t done anything to provoke anybody, just doing my job. Business as usual.”

“Which is?”

“Which is what?” he asked, confused.

“What all do you do for work?”

It was a forward question but I guessed we were being honest now, at least Demi was. If I was going to watch his back, be involved with this whole mess, I needed to know what I was getting into.
