Don’t puke.

As the demolition commenced, Eli repeated the mantra over and over again.

Somehow, he managed not to spill the sour contents of his stomach all over the place.

At least Lacey was true to her word. During the course of the demolition, she refrained from filming Eli, or at least shot around him, as much as possible. He knew the Inspiration Network wanted lots of footage of the Handymen brothers on each episode, so he helped Lacey out and filmed a couple of additional segments in the garden area. There were several mature trees he wanted to preserve for the new design and he spent a couple of minutes in front of the camera, explaining their significance.

He did, of course, have to help with the demolition. Their show had always been a hands-on experience and he didn’t want to leave the hard work to the others.

So he kept his grumbling to himself.

Eli did his best to steer clear of Peter. Luckily, it wasn’t hard. While the crew got to work removing old furniture, tearing down walls and digging up shrub roots, Peter hogged the spotlight. Whenever Lacey aimed a camera at him, he turned on the charm and spat his rehearsed statements about revitalizing his ‘much-loved home away from home’.

It was disgusting. He was lying into the Handymen cameras while performing for some bigwig at another network.

With every wall that came down, Eli worried he was demolishing Bernie’s spirit, even though she wasn’t on set to see it.

When the last piece of gingerbread was removed and the site was cleared, Eli took a moment. He removed his hard hat and plucked at the shirt that clung to his sweaty chest.

From his spot in the back garden, he could see right through to the dock now. He tried to envision Bernie and her sister as kids, running around the yard or giggling next to a campfire, but it was hard to drum up the image with such a blank slate before him. In looking around the site, one would be hard pressed to find any evidence of the girl who used to find sanctuary there.

Dave, one of the crew members, walked over to him. “Hey, Eli. We’re going to take the dock down now.”
