Chapter 6: Town Trollop

Edgar

Edgar had no idea where he was going, only that he had to leave Jolene’s presence before he cracked. If he owned a sword, he would have fallen on it in pure remorse.

Way too much of what she said was true. He couldn’t deny it. He’d had his reasons, of course. Good ones, or so he’d thought, but none of that mattered any longer. He’d not succeeded in talking Jolene out of a dangerous career. All he’d done was hurt a good woman in the process of trying, and now all he wanted to do was go find a hole to die in.

He wandered aimlessly down Main Street, but there wasn’t much open on a Friday night, besides the Long Reach Saloon. Though he generally wasn’t one to darken a place of ill repute, he pushed open the door and dragged his bones inside.

He found a shadowy table for two on the far side of the room. One chair had been removed from the table and dragged to another, more crowded table. That was fine with him, since he wasn’t looking for conversation or company.

When the saloon’s only waitress finally made her way to his table, he didn’t bother looking up. “I’ll take whatever you got the most of on tap, and keep ‘em coming.”

“Why, Edgar Barella!” Nettie trilled. “I thought you were a newly married man.” She was a tall red-head, who was notorious for flirting with her clientele.

“I am.” He bowed his head wearily. “If you’ll just get me that drink, I’d be much obliged.”

No doubt with Nettie’s unfortunate penchant for flapping her tongue, word of his purported indiscretions would be flying around town before the night was over.

He wasn’t wrong.
